have a dell dimension 2350 and the os is win xp home edition. i am having modem trouble. first i was getting an error 797 saying that the modem wasnt present and this occured when i was trying to log unto the net. then i started getting an error 633 stating that the com port was in use. i recieved those two errors when i was trying to connect to the web.

i downloaded the only two new drivers from dells website and tried to reinstall them and i got an error saying that there is no compatible hardware found.

i would have unistalled the previous driver but it wasnt showing up in the device manager. it was there yesterday and now its not.

any help will be gladly appreciated

first, make sure your card is properly seated. i.e. take it out and put it back in. If that fails try different PCI slots, you may have a bad one. if all that doesn't work, somebody else'll have to try and figure it out, that's the best i can do;)

I've seen these type of things happen when a modem died (via lightning). If you have another available, you might try swapping them.

thanks for the info fellas but because the dell pc is still under warranty i have benn hesitant about opening up the case, therefore think i would probably have to send it back to get the modem repaired.

What type of modem is it?

Start>Settings>NetWork&DialUpConnections>Connection "Name">(Right-Click)Properties

Make sure your modem is selected and it is the first on the list. You might have, by accident, added 2 modems by installing 2 drivers and it is reading a non-existing one. Once you've selected the right one (try it first), delete the additional one.

You can also check this via

Start>Settings>ControlPanel>PhoneNetworkModems

Go to modems and see how many you have.

EDIT: Have you called Dell?

the question you have to ask is, do you want to get online now? or in three to six weeks, during which time you'd be without a computer? i opened my old Dell's case and voided the warranty almost the second I got it;)
