View Full Version : Are small cases any good?
keltuzar 02-23-2004, 04:43 PM Like the subject said, my question is if wether small cases any good for cooling? My friends were telling me that there are less heat pockets and that heat flows easily out of the case as opposed to other conventional mid tower cases. What are your views of this subject?

i would imagine that any case has good potential for heat dissapation as long as you have the proper setup. It can be good, or it can be bad. It depends on how many PCI cards u are using, fan location, and so forth. And the same goes for big cases.

An interesting article on chassis setup for heat dissipation can be found here:

unless your going micro then no. they don't follow the correct airflow required to remove the hot air from the case and your friends heads. most likely the psu will get in the way of everything.

Why would the PSU get in the way? Have you ever even used/ built such a machine or are you just regurgitating something you read somewhere?
I've built 5 small form factor machine in the past year, all of them are absolutely fine.

I run a shuttle at home and some of my friends do too.. There's no heat problems at all. Small factor cases tend to come with adequate fans and cooling to provide a decent airflow. Most of the itme the cases are made of aluminium, which helps disspate heat aswell.
If you look at PCsHush (http://www.hushtechnologies.net/) pcs, they use passively cooled P4s and the acutal case acts as the heatsink. No fans what so ever...
It all depends on how your PC is set up. If it heats up, then that's what fans are for...

moron. i'm not even answering this.

umm i this he was talking about a small atx case.
if not then shuttle and micro atx are completely different.
----------------------
if u are using a smaller atx case everything gets in the way of everything. bigger is better in most cases.
the psu gets in the way because theres just no room everything is packed next to everything.
you'd struggle to get fan in there :)
its just rediculous full stop. stick with midi towers.
he didn't say small form factor. ie shuttle, micro, flex. i think he means small case ?
if it is any of those its rediculous to compare because they are different types of system.
shuttles are good. if thats what you want. but don't they have laptops?

My fault.. yeah.. i'd not settle for anything smaller than a midi tower. They're fiddly enough.. I couldn't imagine setting up a system into a mini case
yes, they make laptops, but it's harder to replace certain bits yourself.. laptops don't have PCI slots either... and they don't look quite the same next to your TV and take up more surface space... But those are just my requirements....

Yeah, thats real nice kid.
He didn't specify it was an ATX machine, he said small, thats all. As others have stated, small cases have no more problems than large cases, Just don't buy cheap, badly designed ones.
