View Full Version : Win 2000 folder security...
Apparently my sister needs to use a 'decent' computer for her college course and my folks have asked me if she's welcome to use mine when I'm not using it.
'Pssh... heck no!' was my initial reaction - but that's solely because I won't leave anyone near it unless they're trust worthy. Unfortunately, where computers are concerned, she doesn't fall into this category.
If I set up a user profile for her is it possible to deny her access to the drive I store all my work on (either by hiding it or by password protection)? I presume that if I put her in the standard user group she wouldn't be able to install any software either?

jbw,
You can set her as just a normal user (restricted access) and also set individual permissions on your folders.
Be VERY careful when doing so, its actually possible to prevent ANY login from accessing a folder (by accidently removing the admin)...then your just hosed.
But you can basically prevent access to a folder unless you login to the folder as Admin/pwd etc. This is effective from a local user perspective.
Hi Greg,
I'm a little dubious of how to go about setting individual permissions on folders... like you say the last thing i want to do is lock myself out of my own work. I've got an administrator, a guest and my own user (power user) profiles on this machine at the mo. Do I just go to the folder properties and then security tab? Then I add the administrator account and my own then set all permissions to allow all. Then I add her account and set all permissions to deny? Then I remove the Everyone name. Is that correct?

it's a limited account, and should be enough....

Are you using an NTFS partition? You will need to be to secure it.
Look, create a new test folder, put something in it, Right Click on the folder, go to Properties > Security, set permissions. Log in as your sister and see if you can access it. Verify when you log back on you can access it.
If you decide you know what you're doing, repeat the process with your private data.
Yep all drives are NTFS.
Thanks Matt, why I didn't think of that I don't know (D'oh!).
