View Full Version : Speed modeling session : theme : Cars

The theme for this week, until monday 1st march, is to model a car that actually exists, from 1900s to today, with the constraint of a blueprint or of a photo ref. http://suurland.com is a good ressource, but feel free to search a bit on your own.

post 1-3 hours models (ref/blueprint search,shading, rendering,comping not included), modeled from scratch, you definitely don't have to model the whole car, do what you wish but follow the refs.
Post also unsmoothed wires, different views of your model, and links to refs and/or blueprints .

OMG This one is tough. I was just thinking to myself the other day too, "I need to make a car."
Too bad I can't find any good blues on the vanquish.

I'll try something out, might not be happy with it...we'll see.

I send my car another you see the view that you/they request me ,on the other hand I study cinema and I want to study 3d, I accept any work.

Well I had some down time, so time taken about the 2hr mark, gutted as I wanted to finish, it was my 1st car but work pays the bills, hmphhhh !!!

Hey guys, i'm not sure exactly how long it took me to make this, but i made it during my spare time in class, so i would geuss between 3 and 3.5hrs...i know i know, i exceeded the time, hoping you will give me a little leeway there
anyways its a subaru WRX, i snagged the blueprints off of suurland, i will post a wire upon request

Mmm... about 1:10 of work on this one, but after this i'm going to heavily modify it (chop up parts of it) and take it the whole way. Low poly enough that smooth/subdiv would wreck it right now. Man, you guys are fast, this is what I got done after about 2.5 hours, I actually started it two days ago, and it wasn't supposed to be a "fast" modelled car, I wanted to go for details.

Now here's a topic that got my juices flowing!

I've been aching for an oportunity to test out my new found faith in polys on something hard bodied like a car.

Here's what I got after almost 2 hours of playing around in Maya:

Like I said, this is the first time I am modeling something like this in polys (subdivs to be exact) and not NURBS... I modeled the back of the car in a completly different method then the front, because I learned so much in the two hours that passed between starting the front and "finishing" the trunk.

In fact, I learned so much that I think I'm going to start a new model from scratch! This is fun!

By the way, the car is an Audi A8, the car my current client drives :drool: (it's considered a really expensive car in Israel, mainly because cars here cost about 3 times as much as they do in the US)

I am at 2hours now.
This is sort of fun, pushing yourself to do something in a set time, like real work!
Texturing is taking a while. :)

Here we go i did the ford focus tutorial a while back now i have come back todo it again but with out the tutorial :P

I took me around 2 hours to come up with the pile of crap.

Cants be assed doing anymore, im not a speed moderler really i cant speed model for crap i haven't been using maya for that long only around 4 month..

Hi _dd,

Excellent work on Brum :) now that brings back some memories! You have managed to squash a heck of a lot of detail in there in such a short time and managed to come up with a great pretty much complete model.

OK, took another stab at the Audi A8...
Started over from scratch, used a completely different way to do it (but still used polys)... And got a much more efficient model, a lot less polygons... But I'm not happy with the results... My last one (http://www.zzzrbyte.com/images/3d/speed_modeling/speed_audi_a8_2hrs.jpg) was much better (and faster)

Dennispls - I didn't think my first one was bad either... In fact, I think it came out better then the second... I was just trying different methods to build it... I am actually working on a third version of it right now... Not because I'm unhappy with what I got so far, just to practice and find the technique I am most comfortable with. The first one was done by starting with a cube and subdividing... The second started as a single tiny polygon and extruded and extruded and extruded from there.
How did you model the wheel? There are a million ways to do wheels but I never tried any of them... I guess I'm going to have to try one of them soon.

OK, I am beginning to feel like I am spamming this thread with Audis... But I felt like doing a couple of speedy cars for practice... What I didn't feel like doing was chop up new blueprints and set up image planes everytime... Hence, the multiple Audis. :rolleyes:

So here's another Audi A8, this time I went and added more details in the hour I had left after finishing the basic shape.... And I plan to continue adding details even after the 3 hour mark, which I just passed. Maybe I'll even take this car to the finish line and have a complete "non-speed thread" model.

zzzrByte: Not bad at all! With a good lighting setup and some textures on, im sure it will look great. Make sure you post the result here later. This shows that doing the same model over and over again really pays off. Practice makes perfect! Good luck!

OK, I've littered this thread with too many Audis in the past few days...
So here is the last one... :cool:

Basic shape was done in less then 2 hours... and 2.5 more hours were spent on detailing the hood of the car.

Since I passed the 3 hour mark, and I really want to continue working on this one... I will move this to its own thread in the WIP forum (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=126344). i've never really used nurbs, but do they somehow make the modeling process go faster? thats very good for 2 3/4 hours

ridestowe: imagine having the top edge of the door and then the bottom edge from the top view. then make the profile for the face of the door. then all u do is sweep that profile along the two edges created before.

or even easier just make some splines and loft the surface

so with placing a fes splines u can get some nice large cruved surfaces
nurbs are kewl

Im thinking that is a subaru brat, and if it is you will now have to model the bed seats as they are a signature of the brat

Wings4Me: A very good guess. It is, however, the Brat's larger brother the Baja. As such, I modeld the Baja's screwy bed feature, the door that opens into the cabin.

I've been thinking about working more on it, but it's not real high on my list at the moment. Maybe add the sunroof and rack, and then texture it. Wind up with a remarkably low-poly car. (it's right about 900 polygons now) We'll see.

if u get comfortabel with nurbs u can work really fast
u just have to take alot of time staring at the blueprint before u start modeling so u can think of the curves u will do.
i think the best way to learn nurbs is gnomons dvds
they rock.

Hi Everyone,
i know the "Cars" speed modelling session is a lil out-of-date, but I did a lil speed modelling session for myself to see how far i could get in 3hours. So far it doesn't look bad, but yeah, 3 hours isn't enough. I want to see if i can model and texture the whole thing in 8 hours.

Just gonna put down a few screenshots for now...

What you see now equals getting reference, setting up scene, modelling and just basic material application = 4hours.
