I will possibly be involved with CG work for a broadcast project shot on Digibeta. I plan to have a studio do the transfer of tape to frame sequences and back, using a firewire disk as transport medium. I will do some 3D as well as 2D work, and composite that with filmed footage. The project will finally be edited online, using tapes.

Will 8bit/channel file format suffice (that is 24 bit RGB)? Digibeta stores at 10 bit/channel (8 bits optionally?), so for optimal quality I'm afraid i'd have to output 10 bit files, in the format of the studios liking. (I have earlier only worked with 24 bit RGB, so i'd have to read up on the bit thing, or refuse the project).

Would mini-DV output be an alternative, having lower colour sampling of 4:2:0 as opposed to digibetas 4:2:2? (I guess not) I am trying to minimize costs... In an earlier project, that was done on Betacam SP, I delivered as uncompressed TIFS, that was in turn converted to DV (!) (by the studio), then output to Betacam SP, and then again copied in the online edit. But actually, noone has complained, rather the opposite.

I could borrow a Digibeta deck with SDI connections. I have a dual xeon 2.8 Ghz /2Gb Workstation with a RAID system; however no SDI i/o card or software for the purpose of realtime output. What would be the most inexpensive, yet plausible alternative?

I guess though, for this single project it'd be better to let a studio do it. In any case, i would soon really need to have output on a PAL monitor from Combustion. Hm...

I'm new to this science of broadcast formats and transfer, so please bear with me...
