neonoodle 02-21-2004, 08:37 PM Hey all! I'm about to start sending out my reel to some companies for employment. I'd like to hear what you all think of it.
quicktime version - 24 megs (http://studentpages.scad.edu/~dbokse20/dbokser_reel.mov)
DivX version - 11 megs (http://studentpages.scad.edu/~dbokse20/reel_divx.avi)
Here are some images:

First reply I guess :)
You said it "Animation Reel, so I won't comment on rendering or modeling".
Well, it's pretty damn good ! You show a lot of varied animations skills, and it works well for a demo reel.
I have a comment on the naked guy, he's setup seems pretty good, BUT his shoulder-blades don't move at all. It's usually not that bothering since 99% of 3D setups don't include shoulder-blade animation (even Gollum doesn't have it, but you can't really see it), but in the specific mouvements you show, when he is bent down it becomes very obvious that the blades should move.
And for that last character talking. I think all your animations show personnality and versatility, but that last one seems to have exagerated expressions, and I find it more looking like a "3D animation cliché" than the other scenes...
Good work man.

Thanks for the feedback. I see what you mean about the shoulder blades. The old man wasn't meant to be seen naked, and the render on my reel is an animation test from before the clothes were modelled. I suppose I should rerender the animation with the clothing on if the shoulder blades are looking weird. Also, I agree with your comment about the last lip sync piece. It's the only lip sync I got, though, so I thought I'd put it in there for more variety. Do you think that it adds enough variety as to be worth leaving in or does it detract enough from the reel as to be taken out?

Ok, for the old guy, 4 reasons to put his clothes on
1- It was supposed to have them on ! Poor guy, don't live him naked !
2- The shoulder blades.
3- It will show how you managed the skinning with clothes (now that may be a bad point depending on how well it works with the clothes on...)
4- The guy has no penis ! I know it's stupid, but I always find it a little pueril to model 3D naked guys without penis, they look like "Barbie Ken", rated G... In your case he was supposed to have clothes, so there is no need for a penis, but when you show it like that one doesn't understand that he was supposed to be dressed... :)
As for the lipsynch, it's a bit tricky... I told the same critic on another guy's reel, but he had a 3rd lipsynch working well, so he could leave that one and get rid of the other 2.
In your case I would probably leave it in, but just the fact that you are conscious about the quality of it, shows you have good self-criticism. So I'm not worried that you'll be able to do later on a better lipsynch and pop it in instead of this one ! ;)
