View Full Version : soap bubble
solarblue 07-01-2002, 10:54 PM hi, i'm trying to make a soap bubble, its not going too badly but i have a couple question:
1) can i make Refraction with a gradient, eg fresnel ?
- the buuble wants to be IOR 1.0 in the middle, and transparent, but maybe IOR 1.4 and more reflective at the edge.
2) Im using a radial sla gradient in the Alpha to make the center transparent, but for some reason its not having the right effect as 2d radial it makes a cut-out kind of hole in one side of thesphere, and as 3d cuts a section out of it. I hoped it will make the centre of the bubble transparent and leave the color at the edges.
3) i have a 3d radial rainbow gradient in the color, transparency, reflection and specular reflection slots (and a photo image as environment). A real bubble surface flows though - i tried Fusion with Niose to distort the color maps, but it only made them a little wiggly, not large flows mixing together.
any advice appreciated :)

there's a chart in the manual about refraction and various materials... but nothing else here I can help you with...
I cant remember if it Banji or Nukei, but one of them lets you set your edge transparency and frontal transparency as well......think its Nukei :)

Colorize fused with animated noises would be the colurswirls, and use fresnel fused with that to allow control what angle the colour swilrs are visible at. use this for transperency and reflection as well. Do not use Banj or Banji for bubbles as they weill eliminate the inner highlight of the bubble causing it to look solid rather than hollow.
you should concentrate on fresnel, because it changes the light behaviour of the edges of an object.
sla-fresnel can also be but into the reflection, transparency, color, highlight, channels.
try the spectral-shader to get those colored effects and distort it with avery big sized relief-channel.

I agree with you guys but... how can he give variable ior to the same object? for example 1,2 to thin parts and 1,6 to thicker parts... In XL there's not a variable ior (like in finalRender) i think...
hi, i'm trying to make a soap bubble,
You might want to try this plugin.

bunk
maybe you will receive an answer from cebas but you cannot necessarily rely on that. many postings in different forums used to talk about slowest answering on requests.

thanks for the tips guys, heres an image of hows it is now.
Yes i tried the free cebas plugin about 6 months ago and never a reply :(

I've tried it some times ago: it needs a registration.
I've sent an email to Cebas but I haven't ever received the unlock code :(

did anyone get it back? maybe we can share with the rest who didnt! :)
so i'm still no further with my bubble idea. Especially the noise and alpha effect.
Noise is just moving the edges of the colours, but to be more real needs colours mixing much more on the surface.

could anyone tell me whats the name of the plugin?
and do you if there is a plugin or software can make the structure of the soap bubble?
thanks

You might also look at Remotions Spectral Magic.
http://www.remotion.de.vu/
you cannot set variable IOR's in a single material, therefore blending a material with a lower IOR to a material with a higher IOR is the way to go.
try vertex maps for blending instead of alpha's they give you softer and better gradiants.

On the free stuff page from Renderosity, you can download a nice soap material made by Kromekat.
On the page with the files 85-96.

A view years ago, I tried to create a bubble with XL5.
It's complete with C4D onboard shader done.

Did you use any environment image or is there any objects that reflects on the surface of bubbles? If not, it may lessen the effect I think...or maybe not.

There ist no environment in the scene, only the floor and the light.

There's a nice material on the french c4d forum
http://www.frenchcinema4d.com/index.php?p=matiere
it's called; Gélatine luminescente http://www.frenchcinema4d.com/matiere/images_matiere/vignettes/1092601819.jpg

Well >>here<< (http://www.kromekat.nildram.co.uk/freestuff/soapy.zip) is a link to my soap bubble material I made a year or so ago - I'd probably perfect it further if I opened it up now, but it worked well for my needs at the time! :)
And >>here<< (http://www.kromekat.com/anim/BubblesS3.mov) is an animation commission I used it in so you can see what it looks like.

That French site has a couple interesting materials, but I can't see how to download any of them. Clicking on the thumbnail takes me to a page with bigger image, but no download link. odd.

Ok, I also tried to make a soap bubble, and when I finally mastered it...it exploded, damn! ;)

Hi,
As Rich-Art said, here is the link to the page :-

In the Color, Luminance, Reflection and Bump channels place Stupl Noise in the Colorizer and make a rainbow gradient and repeat twice, adjusting knots to give a good rainbow spread to the noise. Give Animation Speed and Movement and Speed a number in the Noise tab so the noise and color gradient are animated. In Specular, check Metal and set height to 500% and width to 50%. Set Transparency channel to 97% white and IOR to 1.02. and check Fresnel. Make an Air shader with IOR of 1 in Transparency channel and leave all other Channels unchecked.
Make two spheres with one just a hair smaller (.001) than the other. Apply the Soap shader to the bigger and the Air shader to the smaller sphere. Works good for animation too.
best
