Does anyone know a (free) tool that allows you to view mpegs frame by frame? I have some mpegs that I want to use as a reference for animation, but windows media player doesnt let you skip from frame to frame.

Any suggestions?

If you're using windows media player 8 or 9 you can advance frame by frame. Go to View->Enhancements->Play Speed Settings This will show a few more controls for playback of files.

Quicktime Player will also open mpeg-1 files and so will Software DVD players in addition to mpeg-2 files and usually have a frame by frame advance.

If you're like me and don't want to install windows media player 8 or 9 then just go to your windows start button and run : mplay32 it's windows' old player that can go frame by frame. At least win200 has it... I'm not sure about Xp.

yes thank god they still include it, no loadup time no waiting to actually play the video, no interface clutter. mplay32 6.4 is fast clean efficient and effective, I have it set as my default movie player because it literally has no load up time at all. all these ne mediaplayers have so much junk in them they take a bleeding year just to open.

Zoom Player (http://www.inmatrix.com/files/zoomplayer_download.shtml) is a cool player. You can set the frame advance to your mouse's scroll wheel.
