View Full Version : Character: Cartoony Space Hero
Jon-Huhn 02-20-2004, 03:26 AM Created in Max 6 using meshsmooth.
This is my first character model, so please critique everything you can think of including character design, animate-ability, shaders, etc...
The wire-frames seem too cluttered to be effective, if anyone has any ideas about how to show them cleaner please let me know.
I like the look of the character from the front and three-quarters, but I feel the side view is rather weak.
I'm planning on reworking the hands to give them a pudgier, more cartoony feel.

Reminds me of Sylvester Stalone and the suits in SpyKids 3D. Very good :)

Thanks. When I was planning the character, I really wanted to emphasize the stereotypical "muscle-head" look: square jaw, defined cheekbones, etc. I also wanted a somewhat dopey look, so I added droopy eyelids. I didn't mean to charicaturize Stallone, but he pretty much typifies the look I'm after.
My intention was to create a fun character, reminiscent of all the many space-hero types like Space Quest's Rodger Wilco, Futurama's Zapp Brannigan, Calvin and Hobbs' Spaceman Spiff, Toy Story's Buzz Lightyear, etc. All those characters have similarities, and I wanted to capture their best attributes with this guy.
I've never rigged a character for animation, so any comments about the edge loops and stuff like that would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Well first off, I think the character looks great.
I see what you mean about the side view looking a little weak, perhaps that could be rectified by pushing his forehead back a little. Or his jaw out a bit more. Or perhaps push the back of his head in a little, it seems to go back very far, giving the impression of strange weight distribution. Whatever it is, I think his head looks great from the front, but needs to be changed from the side. Perhaps his neck is too big? If that was slimmed down, maybe...
Anyway, love the character, I'd be very interested in seeing any animation you make of him.
The edge loops are hard to comment on as you've posted an "isoline display" version of it, so it's hard to see where you're getting tris, five and siz sided polys. It appears you have a few of them on his cheeks, just above his upper jawbone.

the shoes are the thing i focus on for some reason, might the the tops of them.
However i love the style and the shaders as well as the lighting, I'd love to be able to make my character look like this style.
