Please study page 541 to 549 in the manual.
Although there are some issues to specific tasks , it should get you going.
One specific task I just encountered was:
I wanted the FX to be a separate pass. that was no problem. -However-. You donīt get the rest -without- the fx if you donīt have almost all other options turned on. The result is layers upon layers with shadows, diffuse, specular etc that takes loads of discspace only to be comped in AE to one layer.
