View Full Version : Dont know how to finish....
BluBone 02-18-2004, 04:34 PM Hi guys. I've been working on this on and off for a couple of days now - about 4 hrs in total I guess (2nd half decent painting). I'm not really sure how to finish it / if it is finished.
I feel like stopping and moving on to other stuff, so what do you think? What should I add? Comments in general?
All in photoshop, Wacom, adjustment layers (is that cheating in digital painting?).

Well BluBone...to tell you the truth...no one can tell you if your artwork is finished except for you, so that's totally your decision to decide. If you feel like moving on then go ahead. It's not like you can't always come back to this piece and edit or work on it some more in the future.
Also...there's practically no such thing as cheating when it comes to art. You do what you gotta do to get the image you want to convey and if that means doing things the easy way or even referencing then that's just something you have to do. There's no cheating in art....just shortcutting.

Hi Kwe, thanks for replying. I think its because this piece came out of nowhere... I started ONLY as a techique builder and it became what it is now... but it still feels like a WIP.
I think that some images have limited potential though... This may be one of them. :)

Hey there.........sometimes moving on to other stuff works good.......I had this problem with my first digital painting that I was pretty happy with........Didnt know how to finish...........then I let go of it .........but it was always nagging me to finish.........then 2 years later I sat down and finally finished it...............and I was really happy with it.............
- but this is definately something every artist needs to figure out for himself.........to make this easier for me I try to lay out my work and decide what I´m gonna do before I start........for instance........tonight I said to myself.......ok Im gonna do a rough portrait........no more than 1-2 hours....... the result http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=123842

How to finish this? Well...
Right now the painting is....ok there is grass, and mundane mountain, plus a tree. That's it.
I understand, though, of what you said. You said you feel like stopping and the painting started as a technique builder. That's what I do all the time. It sounds like you're totally stumped if you should finish the artwork....
Since you don't have any clear concept on how to finish it, you should move on (or you can just ignore this and continue, hehe)
Next time, when you've improved much, you can look back to this and redesign

I think I will be leaving it for the minute. Unless some wave of insipration hits me, for now it looks like a dead end.
I have to say though, I am quite happy with the image, probably comparing to all you others on CGtalk makes me think that it needs more... :)
...thanks for your comments guys. They have been helpful.
