View Full Version : Keeping track of keys

Maybe it's because I'm used to Max, but the keys in Maya seem a little vague.

Keys on the timeline show up as a red strip, and once you set a key for a given parameter it causes the value in the channel box to be highlighted. But is there a way to easily tell just where you have specific keys? For example, I set a bunch of translation keys, and was then going to add some rotation keys, but it's not intuitive as to which keys are translation and which are rotation on the timelime. I've been opening up the graph editor to see what's what, but that doesn't seem like the best method.

Maybe I'm missing something?

you're right, it is a little hard to tell whats keyed on any given frame without opening the graph/dope editor... and unfortunately, thats about the only way. you could of course, learn a bit of mel script, and write a window that tells you what attributes are keyed on the current frame... but thats a bit extreme for most people i'd wager. :)

so sorry...

as stable maya is in animation
the timeline and the dopesheet could need some updates

coming from cinema4D I miss the possibility to set markers and to color keys
c4d works with layers in the timeline, so you can color certain keys and turn this color on/off or lock it

ah yes - and the invisible timeslider in the dope is a shame

and by the way ... ok,ok I sop here:D

There is a way to hilight channels in the channel-box and have the time line only show the keys for the selected channels.

But since I use a hot key to turn it on/off I cant remember the name of the mel-script (at least I think its a mel script). Ill check tomorrow and let you know.

Thanks all. I was kinda hoping I was missing something. :)

It'd be nice if the channel box at least somehow marked the values that were keyframes for the current frame. Oh, well, maybe in the future...

djx: Being able to limit the timeline's key display would definitely be a big help. Thanks for checking into that.

its simply an option in your preferences. if u go into the timeline section in the prefs window, you can change the "key ticks" option to "channel box".

I wrote a script a month ago that toggled the timeline preference automatically if the channelbox had selected attributes. I threw it on my site since it might be useful to others.
