View Full Version : Formula 1: 2004 Toyota TF104
F1Racer 02-18-2004, 09:45 AM Heres the next car in the 2004 season that Im rendering.
4 simple studio-type shots of this low-poly game model.
Only hi-res parts are the tyres which I made and have worked on new textures and surfacing for this model.
Other F1 renders are on my website.

Looks very good to me.
Only real critique would be the tire texture and the wheel texturing.
Let's see it on a race track! (Of course it'd be behind Ferrari and Renault..... ;) )

I just noticed you use Lightwave, and I'm about to do an F1 car in LW, and was wondering what techniques you use, and if we could see some wireframes.
Or, even better, how about a tutorial if you had the time?

Just how many polys are there?

I really like it, but my crit, not that I'm an expert or something, it seems like it's going for a game, not for realism. What was your goal?

The goal was to make this game model look as real as possible without altering the car body in any way.
The only addons are the hi poly tyres.
The car on its own is without the tyres is under 7,800 polys.
The body on its own without the entire wheels is 3,300 polys.
Including the tyres its in the 20,000 range

Would you mind posting some wireframes and possibly explaining what techniques you used?

Nice stuff. Not really lowpoly though. But very good. I would like to see a wire and polycount too
Very nice.
Can you tell me where you got your references from? Is it blueprints or just from images? I havew been looking for reference images for F1 cars for a while now.
Thanks.

I would also be interested in any blueprints. Especially of the F2004 or F2003GA. If anyone who's watching this thread can help it'd be greatly appreciated.

No blueprints.
These are simple models made for a PC F1 game.
The 2003/2004 cars were made by the modeller looking at photos and adjusting the original game models to suit.
It just so happens that the guy who modelled this and the guy that did the livery are the same guys who made the original cars for the game company.
One thing I would like to point out is how accurate the livery is.
The artist who made this (Ralph) spent many many days on this as you can see how complex this livery is to get right.
After studying many photos of the real car, each red paint splash it recreated accurately to the original. Now thats dedication :)
I`ll post a wire soon so you can see how low poly it is. :)
flewp: The only technique I can think of to tell you is that the image is lit with a HDRI image and one area light.
The rest is just playing around with the surface attributes.
As for a tutorial, I have no plans for this :) Besides I didnt model the car, I just render them when they're done.

This is the first I've seen of the 2004 F1 cars, but the modelling and texturing looks great. You mentioned the artist was called Ralph. Would that be Ralph Hummerich by any chance? If it is, I remember his texture work/add-ons for the GP3/4 and F1 200X games.

Yep, it is Ralph Hummerich, as mentioned in the credits on the renders.

As I am a big Toyota fan, I say 2 thumbs up!
Shaders could use a little more work to make it more realistic.
But anyway its nice to see a Toyota here on cgtalk :)
Job well done.
