View Full Version : Tired LW user needing something that works...

I am a MAX at work, LW at home - user. I am tired of waiting on LW to get better and overcome their seperated package, one undo, horrible animation tools, no one hiring for it, problems. :thumbsdow On the other hand, I am quite pleased with MAX, but heck, Maya is $1500 cheaper now... So getting to the point, I am interested in getting Maya at home to replace LW. Here are some questions I have:

1 When will Maya 4.5 come out?

2 Will it be $1999?

3 What will be new?

4 Does Maya have MAX4-Meshtools type modeling?

5 I've heard the renderer is bad, is this so? Same thing is said about MAX, but you just have to know how to use it... Is it the same case with Maya?

6 Are there any other LW/Max users who have made the switch, and was it worth it???

Thanks,

Vic

1. I don't know i have heard someone say in September.

2. Alias said that they have permanently lowed the price so i think that it's gonna be the same price.

3. From what i have seen in Betas it's not much in Complete. The big features like Fluid and SubD > NURBS is both for Unlimited.

4. http://www.maya3d.dk/MEL/MJPolyTools/MJPolyTools.htm

5. The render needs some GI and Radiosity i think. I'm not a render expert but i think you just need to know the render before it's any good.

if you download some poly scripts (like the one from mikkel jans) maya is a really powerfull poly modeller, and if you miss something, just write your own scripts

and I don't know why people are always complaining about mayas renderer. sure it don't have a button "add radiosity and all will look nice", but if you light your scene good you get the same results......

and there are also some gi - radiosity scripts out there...

4. Sort of. You'll want the ConnectPolyShape script to simulate subdivision surfaces (since for some bizarre reason SubD is only in Unlimited), and there's a Maya Bonus Game Pack that has some usefull stuff (select edgeloop, etc.).

6. I don't think it's bad, just slow. It's more organic looking than Max's.

Orestes Mantra, in Lightwave you can customize the numbers of undos, not is only one undo....

ya i think its just the layout that has 1 undo. am i right? unless you get a script.?

anyway doesnt matter. i only used undo when i wasnt too sure on what i was making. and was new to apps. but nowadays i can go completely with using no undos. maybe once in a while if i go too fast i might press something wrong. but thats just about it.

having too many undos isnt all that useful. you just lose work youve done.

Thanks for the great replies guys.

And yes, LW only has one undo in Layout. Modeler has multiple. There is a script that supposedly kind of helps with this, but I think it only works with LW 7, and I have 6.5. But that isn't the only reason I am thinking of going to Maya...
