Hi, i started this today, and here is what i've got so far after 4 or 5 hours of modelling. Please tell me what do you think about it. There is a long way to go yet. Thank you very much.

Sergio.

Erm, I'm not totally sure where you're trying to go with this character. She looks like a very pretty woman from the breasts up, and the butt down, but the stuff going on in the middle is creepy. Looks like she's got gills and hasn't got internal organs. Some explanation is probably in order.

That said, the breasts are nice, as is the butt. And the shoulders are shaping up nicely.

It has that thin fairy-look, which is very good, however, the breasts could follow the same pattern and be sized down a bit, show some more ribs aswell,

otherwise, it's a great start!

Well, i don't really know where i'm going with this, just started modelling and got this. :)
I do agree that the rest of the body should be more skeletal, i'm working on that. Here is a little update:

Thank you very much for the comments and critics, keep'em coming please.

You need to study ribs.
You also need to decide if you're aiming for:
"african refugee skinny" http://emeagwali.com/photos/biafra/starving-biafran-refugee-child.jpg
or "fassion model skinny"http://www.hilary.com/images/skinny.jpeg .

Remember that the sternum connects the ribs in the middle of the chest, so there should be a flat area there. Also, individual ribs should all be the same size. Thicker than what you've got, and not so deep

Hi Tahl'eN, thank you very much for taking the time to show me that. You're right, i need to study ribs, i'll check some anatomy books and post some updates. Thank you!

Wow. Dramatic improvment. It's still creepy as heck, and the breasts are maybe a little big yet. But it's looking really good now. (-:

Faery's of the underworld are rather creepy historically speaking. I'd definitely go evil with this one. I see too many happy go lucky models, go out from the norm is my motto.

Hi, thank you very much for the comments.

Tahl'eN: thanks, i'm glad you like it.

Emmortal1: yes, that's what i want to do, thank you.

Ok, going to work on the face right now, see ya.

BTW, do you think the size of the head is too big?

Tahl'eN
02-28-2004, 03:26 AM
I don't think the head is too big. If anything, it's a little too small, and the neck is a little too long.

zaidoigres
02-28-2004, 06:24 PM
Well, this is the (basic) head, still have to attach the ears and add details, but let me know what do you think so far. Thank you.

Hi again, here is another update. I still have to work on the sternum, foot and back areas. Also i've to do the wings. And, of course, i must give her some hair. See you.

Tahl'eN

Ears still looks a little high. Work the sternum, of course. Also work the pelvis a little more, and the abs need to connect to the ribs, rather than flowing under them.

You've got great detail on the ribs, stomach back and face. Now you need to carry that down the legs and across the chest.

zaidoigres
03-01-2004, 06:06 PM
Hi Tahl'eN, i've fixed the ears a little. Do you still think they are too high?

no they're not, but...maybe you should bring the back of the head forward...looks sort of like conehead x.x;;

zaidoigres
03-01-2004, 11:01 PM
Hi hpslashluvr, yes, the idea is to make her head's shape that way, but maybe it is too much considering also that she's gonna have hair and that would increase the size. Thank you.

This is really starting to come together, nice modeling. Its your art and you can do anything you want, but I think that if this fairy is THIS thin, eg severly malnurished, I think her breasts would be basically non existant, or at least very small, like a fashion model.

themonke
03-14-2004, 04:37 AM
very nice, the body's skinnyness sorta reminds me of someone i used to work with

my stomach tells me that the head and face should be a bit more "angular" (up to you to interpret that)

zaidoigres
03-15-2004, 05:07 AM
Hi! After a few days i've got some time to work just a little more on the model. Thank you all for your comments. I think you are right about the breasts' size so I made them smaller, so tell me what you think. Still have to work on the chest and feet areas. Also i have to finish the wings and then start with the texture work. See you.

i've been following your work process...at first, the fairy freaked me out...totally..i had never seen someone that skinny...::shivers::
but now, it actually looks really really good...but still, the ribs don't look appealing....but hey, who expects ribs to look appealing...
nice work

i like a lot, but it looks too human.
in many comics of fantasy books you can see fairies as half human half butterfly or night-fly.
i think a fairy should be more "contaminated" dunno if u understand what i mean, not just skinny or alien cranium shaped, but really this is my opinion, your model is ok and sharming.

will you keep it on the base or will u texturize and give life?

this is really coming along. As a few have said an evil character is cool, makes it alot more complex. Ribs look good for this character, thought they do pretrude out just a tad. I like every about the model, you really got good breats lol what a phrase.

I like watchin pieces develop, and like to see what the artist intended, but one thing that doesnt sit well is her pelvic bone, i know this is a fairy en all but to me looks a little to supernatrual, more so than the rest of her body. BUT...

If your going for that emaciate look, then this works pretty well.

I really liked the deatail on the back and the face is really clean and show alot of character.

catn wait to see more. Tell us your gonna animate this creature once your finished, plz :)

ok, that's one FREAKY fairy... i'm definately changing the way I thought of fairies so far...!!

I think she has a big ass and thighs. Get her to exercise. Plus, make her whole waist area a bit smaller (I mean the bone, not the skin directly above that). Also, that bone seems to have a tilt forward.

That would be all.

For want of a more fine art based comparison, I love the (Tim) Burtonesque feeling of this. Once you're finished please do her justice by putting her in a similarly well worked environment.

Hey, i just wanted to add my 2C, the progress on this one is just excellent, i liked the initial thought and i'm really liking the direction you've taken this fairy. If you get a chance, pick up good fairies/bad fairies by Brian Froude and Alan Lee, you might get some good references from that (i know i did, working on a pookah at the moment). I do agree however that you need to tilt the pelvis back, keep it jutting, but not so far, right now it doesn't look like her legs are actually connected to her pelvis very well and you might have trouble rigging her as is (although you might not, surprise us ;) ) good job!

Hi, I started the base in which she's gonna stand. I'm making this model for my demo reel, so i thought it would be a good idea to put her on a base (pedestal). But I want to do something that has relation with the style. Maybe, when she's finished, I'll make a still scene with an environment, perhaps. But, for now, just the base.
So, here is the beginning, please tell me what you think. Thank you very much.

Itīs damn good! I really love this evil fairy (the best evil fairy Iīve ever seen). The skin and the details are great, but I think the ribs are a little bit too sharp. The pedestal looks now a bit like plasticine, but I think in the end it will be great, maybe you make also some nice details (leaves and small roots for example). Keep it up, your work is fascinating.

hey, i was checking out ur progression.......the model came a long way. I like the texturing and the evilness... hehehe

It does look like a bad fairy from the book good fairies, bad fairies.
I think that the ribs are a bit much, but i guess its the style u are going for. The pedestal is coming out nice. Cant wait to see a final render.

JasonOsipa

This is amazing progress, but the body from navel to shoulders -even for a style- needs more lovin, I think.

There are three really big things hurting the bony ribs thing, right now it looks more like she has curtains gathered up under her arms and around under her breasts.

1 ) When you look at bony ribs, they look a certain way because skin is taught over an underlying structure. You get dips, concave dips, not just "out parts" and "in parts". It looks like you're getting two convex dips per rib, and so it looks more like gathered skin than pulled skin, try concave ones, instead.

2 ) The ribs seem not to be a part of the area below her. They seem to "shelf" off diving in towards her midsection. It doesn't look so much a stylistic choice as it does a mistake. Make that a slightly more "cooperative" transition, and I think that'll sink her body/ribs into one piece on the bottom half.

3 ) Does she have ribs above her under-boob line? The fact that it just stops having detail under the boobs, and also between them, again, makes it not quite seem like ribs.

So, your shapes are great, and everything else is fantastic, but I think she looks like she's "wearing" a bony ribs vest or something, more than having them in her own skin.

My 2c, take em or leave em. One thing for sure is, this has been a really impressive progression. -J.

Hi, thank you Jason, I do agree with what you say, I'm not very happy with the ribs neither and I'll try to fix them if I have the time, or I'll keep your advice in mind for next models. There are also other things that bothers me but I'm running out of time right now. Thank you for taking the time.
So, here is the progress on the pedestal, hope you like it. Thanks.

The progression from start to finish in this thread is really very impressive. Really shows how it's progressed from it's initial state to what it is now.

I love the style that you're going for but I wouldn't necesarily call it "evil" or "bad". It just looks like an unfortunate fairy. Sort of like an ugly duckling of the fairies.

The texture on the wings is fairly astounding, I really need to learn how to texture and get a much bigger tablet. 4"x3" really doesn't cut it.

I've been making a pixie/fairy type creature for my University assignment too for a while. Guess I may as well chuck up a WIP thread sometime soon too.

Keep up the good work mate, it's looking fantastic.

Fascinating... I like the shading on the tree, this looks realistic. Will the pedestal stay grey? It would look nice if the material is like old wood with some moss and the ornaments for example like stone. However, it is one of my favourite artwork and it will be fantastic.
