"There was a time when an arcade operator in America could buy a Ms. Pac-Man machine for less than $1,000, let it sit in an arcade, bar or storefront, and see that game make back over 30 times the initial investment. In 2004, that kind of profit margin is little more than a pipe dream. "

simply put: why go out when the game's sitting in your living room, with a bigscreen TV and full 5.1 digital surround?

Unless of course you're going to D&B, in which case it's all good! Arcade games + alcohol + food = good times!

[Edit]

The reason I stopped playing arcade games is that they started costing too much to play. I used to be able to make $0.25 last for at least 15 minutes or more (OK sometimes an hour) on an arcade machine. Now I have to spend $1.00 and it is barely 3 or 4 minutes before I'm asked to deposit another whopping $1.00 to continue playing.

because beating someone in a fighter game or in counter strike is much more rewarding when you can see the person lose.

also more rewarding when others are around watching you go on a 10+ win streak. goto any LAN event and any arcade that had Capcom vs SNK2 and you'll see how more exciting it is when playing someone in person.

places like D&B cater to the occasional gamer, charger $1.50 to play a game and not stocking the hardcore games. if your a hardcore gamer, places like D&B and Gameworks get old after 1-2 visits.

thank god i have Lanwerx (http://www.lanwex.com) to goto...

True. I'm currently obsessed with Initial D arcade stage. and that cost $1 per game that last maybe 5 min. I could get the ps2 version but there's still no replacing the experience of getting your @ss handed back to you by someone that is way better than you in the arcade. Adding insult to your already damaged pride, they have to be few years younger than you, and with a cocky attitute. Bastards.:banghead:
