View Full Version : videoClip "à la rencontre de Bolino"
http://www.e338.com/forums/Bolino.jpg
So here it is fellas.
We've been working a full month on a videoClip called "à la rencontre de Bolino" , which can be translated by "Let’s meet Bolino".
You can download it in Hires (http://hey.prdt4themasses.com/bolino/video/Bolino_HighDivX.avi) or Lowres (http://hey.prdt4themasses.com/bolino/video/Bolino_LowDivX.avi)
(rightClic, save target as)
You can also have a look at the website (http://hey.prdt4themasses.com/bolino)
Video requires DivX codec, website is a popUp so check if your browser tolerates'em ;)
The guy (Bolino) is about to release his first album (suddenly paused for paternity reasons, cheers!), and though this song is only a raw version, we decided to use it for the promotional videoClip.
I hope you'll enjoy it, or at least, the song itself. Watch it several times before asking anything please, it's not so long (2min) and the density of both lyrics and video deserves to pay attention to details.
I asked a translation (thanks Sev') so you can better understand what it's all about, here it is:
Let’s meet Bolino, one asthmatic singer too many
The very one who woke up too late, on the day they were passing out stage names
The very one who plays solo, cos’ he turned the local scene against him
Experimental/underground/out of touch like Hervé Villard who’d cover Doc Gyneco
His hour of glory was the TV news anchored by J P Pernault
Between a calf’s head recipe and an old guy handcrafting clogs
Let’s meet Bolino the singer who wasn’t worth 3 euros
On his incredible tour, in the metro station. Get off at Denfert Rochereau
Also seen at St Malo’s campsite bawling in front of three redneck families
His repertoire suffers of polio and he also has a cover of Etienne Daho
He has friends of sound advice who could all be managers, they say :
‘ Bolino, you’re too fat to ever be a pro,
Take a break from aperitif, get on your bike again,
Lower your head and maybe at night, from behind, you’ll be mistaken for Bernard Hinault
How long before he finds a real job ?

the website contains pictures, a making off, and other stuff such as rigging details, etc...
i repeat, this was all done in a month, we started preProduction the 3rd of january, and finished the last DV compilation the 5th of february. We were 3 people involved, sharing the whole stuff.

super style man, simply... i like it, camera, cut, wow its perfect man, :applause: :applause: :applause:
Thanks fellas!
As i told you, we were 3 to work on this video. The deadline was kinda hot, and while the storyboard was going on, i was still practicing my rigging stuff and working on the "pipeline" tools.
So it took us a while to really start the production itself, but we were all ready for the animation part of the job when the first Rig felt on the playground.
After that, the build of the other characters was easier and faster.
Timeline was done with Stills, cuts decided, all we had to think about was the animation itself. 4 days before the end, while the animation was still going on, i jumped onto post-process and compositing.
One more thing, the other two, in the job with me, Croco and Potato, are new in CG, they are comin' out traditionnal animation school. a new team...

Care to tell us what "pipeline" you used ? soft ? renderer ?
anyway bravo

I have learned a lot of the "Fast Animation Rig" DVD from JS Schleifer. Rig were built the way he explains, so we could use the LowRes HiRes melscript (with a tiny implementation of the facialRig Stuff).
Rigs were placed on a small Server accessible via an environment variable (so the script picks rigs directly there, even though the project is set in a different place).
The script deals with references, so you can always modify the rendering version of the character without affecting the animation (in a bad sens i mean).
There were also many variation of a single character sometimes, such as Bolino, for exemple ( 1Low Res/Hi Res Rig, 1 Hi resRigOnlyWithAllGuitars, and 1 BlendShapeOnlyRig)...
The Hi res Rig were almost realTime (Low-polygons ). Lo res Rigs were used for scenes with many characters.
Maya for everything about 3d + Tomcat for the rendering of the strokes. After Fx for compositing and Fx. Photoshop for mattes and textures. Adobe Audition for audio mix.
That was a "noTimeToWaste" schedule ;) but with great fun (did is say crisis? uh? who says that?? ).
SeeYa
Have a look at the website itself, explications en français de la partie RIG, plus many reference pictures ....
Excellent ! Great style !
J'aime beaucoup l'ambiance qui se prête vraiment bien a la musique.
Encore bravo

I really enjoyed the style and additude here. A nice watch, but it took a few times to figure out what was going on. Maybe the language barrier... or maybe being struck by the visual style, and adjusting to that, took my attention away from the story. After a few times the story came clear. I think the first time he steals the banjo-style guitar, it should be very clear what is happening. Its like he creaps up on the fella, then he's sitting and putting something in a cup (a coin?) then he's holding the guitar. If that first heist were more direct and clear (actually showing th guitar being removed from his hands) the rest of the times could work better as just being implied.
Overall I see the amount of work you guys did here and am thouroughly impressed.
Magnificent!

You should put some space ship/nude fantasy women and formula one in your next video clip if you want more replies :p
But I'm sure E338 know how to manage the best video clip to
get a lot of replies :)

Hi. Finally i'm awake...
So what about this videoClip? Some comments in the night? Oups. Not so much in fact.
What's happening in there guys? What is this sudden lack of curiosity all about, can you tell me? I'm not talking about the left comments, nope.
But SO FEW READS of the post itself... I understand that people don't always have time to download a video, but at least they should read the post , shouln't they?
Ok. So...

Z1K0B4: You're right about the complexity of understanding of the general story. This is true it's kinda hard the first time to figure out what it's all about.
BUT YOU WATCHED IT SEVERAL TIMES!!! we did it!!! Yeah. I'm pretty glad you watched it many times, that mean it's not too boring. Yeah that's true it's a strange justification but i think it's a good thing.
I also think the language is and meanwhile isn't a problem. We took some points of the lyrics to build this story, but not in the same order. That was impossible to go as fast as the song speeds, it would have been a succession of pictures, nothing more. Yeah, a videoClip would you say... uhm
So "the language", i said, is not really a issue here if we talk about the first time you watch it. That goes to fast to focus on one or another precisely. I think there are lacks, as always, but also some good points consirering the fact that you cannot understand it the first time. As we're talking about a videoClip, and let me dream for a while as the video might be broadcasted 150 times per day (at least on french TV, or... on Canal32, or crappyLittleLocalTV), people will have opportunities to understand the unbelievable truth !!!
V2n, you're right about the space ship/nude fantasy women and formula one titles. Actually, i'm working on a new project:

C'est magnifique! Je ne parle pas français très bien, mais j'ai pensé que je devrais vous donner des félicitations en votre propre langue. Je suis désolé pour ma mauvaise grammaire.
Your english is better than my french. I would have left a comment sooner, but I was still absorbing how brilliant this clip is. The only technical critique I can offer is that when Bolino drags the red guitar out of the metro car, it seems to bounce strangely. As stated above, I don't speak French very well, but I understood the plot the first time I watched the clip, but as I watched it again and again, I saw details that I had missed on the first viewings. I think it's an amazing achievement. Bravo!

Hi! me again.
Thanks Tencendur, for both your comments and french efforts. You don't have to be sorry for your grammar, it's not bad and mine ain't so far from yours i think.
Some people will say: "hey baboon, stop squatting the page 1 with your oldies!!!"
and i would answer:"yeah. yeah (very lounge, soft voice) but anyway, (short pause) , have, (another short pause, strange but it makes it mo' natural) a look at it! You may like this 2min funkyShit(micro pause)Stuff.
I stop this short "eh french kids, let's gonna talk Comics' english" section of the thread. Thanks for your time, and your patience.
See ya fellas. I'll be back soon.

Nice work! The faces have a lot of character to them, and the animation is great, very snappy. Definitely worth a couple of watches.
Can't think of much to crit, though there are places when I find the colours a little too saturated/primary for my taste.
Congrats on getting it done in the time
FINALLY i could watch it!
haha really fun! very good music. I watched it twice. i really like the timing(i don't know if the word is correct). i just love the end when he's all alone in the light. All dudes are nice and have a lot of character. The story is clear and goes very well with the song. though i didn't understand at first that he stole guitars to the other guys. Really great job! and really nice style! and yes in some ways it does remind me of Wopah style.

Hmm... I don't understand why this thread has so few views. I suggest downloading the clip because it is one of the most creative and unique things I have seen here on CGTalk. It doesn't have any sweet 3d cars or naked cyber chicks, instead it represents a truly artistic approach to making 3d video. In my opinion everyone here should see this.
Yes, it's that good.
-T
tencendur, i totally agree with you. i'm not a very active member and this thread is the first i comment since months. so i believe this clip has high artistic and creative qualities far from as you say cyber chicks and 3d cars...
Hey!
It's been a long time I should register myself on Cgtalk... as I look at it regularly, I never did... (lack of time we'll say...) But today I DO! And I do it for the right purpose!!
So here it is my first reply...
What the heck is going on here?? You've got that thread open since 10 days and so few people react on it?? Does everyone else istoo lazy to download it? Come on!! It took me 45 sec to get it on my disk... (high-res) Is it because it's in french? who care? I mean, even if you don't understand french, you might appreciate the whole thing, especially the animation work and character design. Designs, which are really characteristic and where we can recognize A.H touch
So somebody have to tell me how it works here... About this "star classification" This kind of work deserve stars... and no star? Why? Is it link to views? Or is it as a monarchy where the master gives you reward...
I don't need to tell how I appreciate that kind of work, which I do appreciate otherwise I didn't write. So  cheers Hey! team Keep working as you do every days & nights... As you like it too :p
Knock! Knock!!
:wip: :wip:
Look at it. Appreciate and react
eh!? glad to see you my friend. It took me a moment to figure out who was behind "Neck" (though it was obvious, who else do i know, living in Lyon who should have broken his neck each week end with his weirdo hobbies???) .
Yeah guys, it's a shame people don't pay much more attention to this thread. I had a doubt with the title, wondering if i should tranlate it or not. But i thought that the "videoClip" mention would be enough to tease curiosity. Hell, i was wrong.
The reason why i'm keeping the thread alive for a while is that it seems that the reactions were... uhm... good in fact.
Yeah, good reactions.
Joy, tears, love. A few comments, remarks, such as the colors, way to funky-rvb for some of you, or also about the strange cuts.
We talked about that, i invite you watching this whole thread to get the answers (remember those old kind of RPG books, jump to page 9, then page 120, you are dead, **** it, uhm...page 9 again, choice b, etc... this is the same here).
But watch this. 2minutes. Not so long. Nice divX as optimized as it can be. The story of a man, who turns the subway into a nice gameplay (see the rhyme?).

assassinDemoReel is comin' too but you won't have SF until the last one of ya have seen this clip first. may be i'll be weak to and show it before but... no. no no no!

Love those character designs. Truly, this is something new to look at... listen to. The song was awesome. I can't follow the "plot?" (I thought this was just a clip or teaser?) but then, I dont parle Francais. Like some other people, I have a slight problem with the color choices. It would look better in black and white as it is now.
I like your stuff, man.

This is great. In fact, it's some of the best stuff i've seen here for a while. It's great that there is people out there trying to do things in their own way, that's what's pushing art forward. That's the main problem with CG - If it's not photorealistic, or pixar--cartoonish, naked faires, big robots and mechs, people don't seem to understand it.
Unique style, great characters, wonderful all over.

I can't think of a word to describe how... ****ING EXCELLENT that animation was!!
I've been vaguely aware of you from the thing you have at toonshade.com (I really want to figure out some of your render techniques for my animation at design school)
I showed this to some guys at school (4th year digital media students) and we all decided we should just go home and cry.
I love it how you casually play down all the goreyness of the masacre he goes on, and the style just stays kind of sweet and delightful.
Do you have any rendering tutorials anywhere? or are your techniques too secret.
I hope you haven't stopped checking this thread. I'm gonna tell all my friends.
Dylan
Hi,
This is, i think, one of the best ways to start a day... i mean, such enthousiasm! Thanks to you.
If you've seen the ToonShade website, you might have a clearer idea of how we managed this kind of rendering.
This is a mix beetween handpainted textures + paintFx strokes (with toonshade). My girlfriend and another friend, who worked on the design of the character, gave me drawings. I then tryed to get as close as possible of this drawing. The tooshade shader gave me the ability to add those sharp lines that, in my opinion, are way more dynamic than any classical cellShader.
To have this result, i "simply" forced the shader to put lines where i wanted to, by drawing and creasing edges on the geometries, where they were line on the related drawing. The shader was also creating the "contour" lines automaticaly, and the texture painted for the color channel, was also containing some strokes.
After that, there was of course a bit of post fx to add groove to the whole picture.
I animated almost 1/4 of the project, leaving the rest to my fellas(*). So i'm sure they will appreciate your comments as i do.
New Zealand rules, gimmi a ticket for WETA!!
warm thank dude,
Vote for me (www.e338.com/assassin (http://www.e338.com/assassin))
(*) we had 1month to make the whole stuff. 2week of researches, scenario, character design, r&d, 2 weeks of production, modelling-rigging-animation-postFx). The 2 animators i had on this project are traditionnal animators with no experience on maya. I had to create rig easy to play with.
DKMNZ
07-29-2004, 11:01 PM
cool, great to hear back from you. Yeah, NZ is pretty good. I live in the same town as WETA operates from and I'm a senior at the main design school, and even WE can't go and check it out. it sux so much, you have to beg and plead and do things like dressing up as a gorrilla and waiting outside the gates for PJ. (it worked once).
I've been messing with toonshading since I got into 3D a year ago, its a fun way to get a good aesthetic huh? I was talking with a friend of mine about it and we were saying how 'toonshading' is not really about cartoons at all anymore, but it is a seperate style that is forming oon its own.
What 3D software/renderers do you use? I'm playing with Maya and mental ray toonshaders. I can't post anything yet, but working on some space.
dylan
yeah. i guess it must be hard to meet the king nowadays. anyway...
just using maya, with the native renderer. Sometime, mentalRay for fun, but it ain't that fun in fact ;) and i'm sure it starts beeing interresting when you are more familiar with it's own rendering nodes instead of maya's one. So, it's ain't my job anymore... sic
So this is why i'm layering everything i make, with an abusive taste for compositing and post fx. A good way for me to reach the kind of rendering i want.
What i don't like with cell shader is the "too much perfect" look of it, on rounded shapes. I pretty much enjoy Tomcat because of that. You're free to put whatever you wan't as a shader, and add the power of strokes to it. Much more natural, and easier to mix with real 2D.
It seems that mentalRay gives the ability to play a lot with "contour", and stuff. Should have a look at it, but i'm more involved in modeling and animation at the moment.
Show me your work dude! I'm curious.
SeeYa
