Here is my first work, created in Maya!
Wood texture was created in Photoshop.

I hope to be making stuff like you guys are making soon!

It looks good for a new user... But here are a few things you can try:

-If you're using Maya 5.0 i recomend using mental ray as your renderer making sure to enable Global Illumination, and Caustics, and Final Gather in the Render Globals menu.

-Downloading some textures i.e. wood textures for the table is advisable.

-Create some other objects in the scene if not an entire room to give the glass something to reflect.

-Your renders may take longer to do, but the results will be more realistic. Here's a test i did with glasses and wine in Maya 5.0 with mental ray:

The glass and wine aren't refracting the light very well, that needs work, also it is a very flat render, the table texture needs work, too even, get some bump, and try bumping down the lighting a little, add some variation.

Nice job for a first render

Try to make a background, like a wall with a window or something, so it will fill up the scene a bit. (instead of the black background) And if you want to let it look very realistic, you should try using caustics for the wine glass (but that could be a bit too advanced ;)) And like Clockwork said, try a little bumpmap for the wood shader.

The light is far too bright.
The wine is too clear, it needs to be darker and it needs a higher density, it looks like redish water on your picture.
The IOR of glass is 1.56 (that´s at least what MAX says).

Keep goin´

shadow is too dark, wine is too much transparent

it wants only training and time
