View Full Version : Help with Background painting
LucentDreams 07-01-2002, 02:45 AM kay I need a bit of help right now on this BG for my film, I will be starting a WIP thread for the whole film soon enough but I need some serious 2D artist help.
Here is the first BG painted for the film, this is the style I am going for, kind of a more lush powerpuff girls thing going on I guess.

Hey Kaiskai, I like your lil' city! lol
For your mirror's scene I think that the color depend of the gorrilla's color and the atmosphere that you want to put in this cut ...say us !
But you got a really cool cartoon style!!! :applause:

bsically the scene starts off totally darkblue (gorilla colour) and then the gorilla will wipe across the camerarevealing the mirror. his shoulder will remain visible in the bottom left corner though. then he checks out himself in the mirror and his lef arm will rise to wipe the camera into the next scene. When he is checking out his back, he is imagining hmself as a famous Silver back gorilla (his back is gray rather than silver for most the film, till he does become famous.)
Here is the colour concept from ages ago of the gorilla(ignore the BG) and also the latest design of the gorilla.
http://www.cgi.third-era.com/~kaiskai/gorilla.jpg
http://www.cgi.third-era.com/~kaiskai/newgorilla.jpg
the stuff in the mirror will be clipped out in compositing using an alpha map with some straks for hilights and a little shimmer on the edges (hence the colours inside the mirror) the BG underneath (in the mirror) is simply a daker slightly more saturated blue thant the walls.
sorry for the big pics guys I could make them smaller if needed. and don't mentioon all the problems with the gorilla in the first pic, it was an old desing and I played around with it in flash and bsically disjointed his left arm, just posted for a colour model sort of thing.

look at what Bluth does with colour...
your colour needs to be pumped up a bit...seems very monochromatic...look at the way Bluth makes colour vibrate...
...also watch your contrast too...if I squint I lose the hills and the sky becomes flat...
...your volumes don't seem ro be consistent in your character sketches either...minor problems with volumes...but I dig the overall design...
do you have any animation using this guy yet?

yes volumes has been a problem though the side by side somparison was a concept sketch and then a more tight refined version of the concept whre I fix things like the arm and such. The one with the BG was near the start of the school year god have i learned a lot and improved so much since then. Amazing what you can learn with good teachers.
I'll boost the contras a bit more, but the contrast and saturation are lower due to eventual TV output. I have my dualdsiplay set up to the TV and I check all my paintings ontheir to get the accurate output. so everything will look a little duller than the TV version unfortunately.
And the backgrounds are monochromatic, this is the style I have shosen, Tartakovsky and McCracken rather than Bluth or Ulimeyer. Think PowerPuff Girls, and Samurai Jack. UPA rather than Disney/Bluth.
here are some samples of what I am going for from PPG.

yeah there is an artline but I covered it up for display purposes. Basically that side will always be covered by a held cel so no need to draw or paint it.
Just to add to what I was saying about the Transfer to TV issue, in the second one the BG is slightly blue and the frame of the mirror would be a little more orange. I wanted a subtle blue and had to almost go to grey to get it.

if it is the flat style you are going for [ie:UPA, PPgirls] you will notice in all your bg examples they are using contrast between the monochromatic colours to create depth... a stacking technique... dark foregraound to light background [or vice versa]... that is what I menat by upping the contrast on your peice... having the closest hill be darker and the other receed in tone...
as far as the gorilla goes...the volumes I was basing my opinion off of were on your cleaner drawing...
i have attached an example on what I saw/though needed fixing... basically some of your features were off centre lines [chin] and there was no sense of perspective on the shoulders and arms [when in the feet and head there was some intent to show perspective]... overall I would say great start, and like I asked earlier...you gonna show some animation? I would like to see them move...
by the way... I lurked around looking at some of your pics on your site... I like your moose...that is a fun character...

ahh gotcha on the BG, that shouldn't be too hard to fix, thats a great point my firend mentioned that in the early stages of the hils sky ans road but I just didn't pay attention I guess.
unfotunately the line tests i have are A)all at school, B) only keys) and C) currently scenes of closeups and and the antagonist I wll let you know when I stsrt the big WIP thread coming as soon as I finish some audio stuff and finish the final Character pack. (I keep teaking th Gorilla, my main character keeps changing.
These points you made will be integrated in, the forehead in this image neeads to go out a little further too I think. Thanks a lot, this will help a lot. The challeng I am finding in this style is deciding how Flat and how much perspective to use in the characters. I will have some testes in a few days and hopefully the new leica reel tomorrow (just added some updated Story board panels and still fixing the audio and overall timing)
You are now on my buddy list:beer: as you seem to know what your are talking about when it comes to this stuff.

thanks B:L, here is an update on the city scene, still not sure about the mirror one. well doing the other BG's for now maybe a week or two I will know what I want to do with it. I ssume I will be tweaking all of these when I get down to DIP I intend on only having line inside the character, or no line at all, (this may be a challenge for coloring the face though.
Whats your take on that?

This background painting looks nice. I think the background elements are fine, maybe some animated elements (an airplane? birds?) in the final composite. But I think your foreground needs work. Use scale and colour to give the piece more depth, especially since the foreground and background are so visibly divided ('over the hill' effect). Personally, I would also make the brush strokes on the road less obvious.
A good way to bring the foreground forward is to put an element that draws attention to itself first then leads the eye along the path. The cliched example is the signpost with the arrow. Maybe something nailed to one of the fences?
Hope this helps!

Hmm me thinks the buildings need to be blue. Here is a quick composite of what the scen will be like, and the original storyboard panel.

Unless you are mimicking Southpark...all your character's should have some perspective [even Magoo was drawn with the foreground leg slightly longer than the background leg - cheated perspective]

I hope so, or my salary isn't justified! :surprised :surprised

kaiskai, the city looks good, but perhaps the colors need a little more saturation. Try screwing around with image/adjust/variations in photoshop for some of the adjusted color palletes you could use. Maybe a little more blue in some areas, or variation in the sky (from yellow to red as it fades away from city?) I definitly dig the characters though, good luck!!!

If you had variation in the sky, it might create more contrast between the forground monkeys highlighted edge and the sky. Right now, the monkey's profile almost fades into the sky, because of that highlight.

there smoooth and shiny:scream:
A little red I'll try it out, as for the overall saturation that is due to the fact it will later be transfere to telivision where all saturation gets boosted. As for some blue thats what i was notiving, I think all the BG's will need some blue in them, and I think the character will have to be a lighter blue as well to help seperate him. Was considering making the building blue will try it out.
