View Full Version : Snapping IK
Heinz 02-15-2004, 12:44 PM Hey guys..
I have just rigged my first character.. and set up limits and full IK.... but my problem is that when i move my goals around.... the arm are snapping from one position to another...
And if i keyframe the arm upwards and 10 frames later downwards... when he is moving his arm then on the middle its snapping someway and its not looking good... any tips!?..

mhh..strange.
what is the scaling of your scene? if heard that lw has problems with large "dimensions" like a character that is 100 m high.

I've had this problem with heavier characters.
Things to try:
Turn off or hide all items you're not using.
Keep you sub-division low for work and high for render.
Make sure you grid square size is set low enough to allow fine interaction. Don't have a 1.5 meter character and a 10 meter grid square size. That's just trouble. As a rule of thumb, I keep my grid square size at approx 1/2 the size of my working model.

Sounds like you created your bones parented in exactly straight lines. Try giving your bones a little tilt in the direction of the way you want the joint to bend when setting up your character.
If you have them exactly straight when you create IK, the IK solver sometimes has trouble figuring out if you want the bend to go + or - on the rotation.

I would agree with webfox. Prebending bones indicates to the IK solver which way theyre supposed to bend. When I do this I rarely even have to use contraints. If I do I make sure I dont set them to 0 but always have a tiny bit of bias.
Also as was suggested, if you dont build your characters to scale you need to adjust the goal strength inverse to the characters size. IOW if the character is very large you use a much smaller goal strength and vice versa.
You also need to make sure that your characters are not large distances from the origin or that you have very large scale scenes. This can also make IK misbehave.
