CGTalk - lightning newbie

Ive been using max for almsot 3 years, but i didnt pay attention to lightning much, all my lightning are a couple of omni lights thats it, i see all these awesome renders with no maps or special renderers but they have a reallistic feel to them, wich i dont :P
how exactly do u create this neutral light GI or however its called

Though I don't say I got lighting mastered yet, I belive I'm ok...

Tons of playing around helped me, but if I started today I would most likely get this book.

Digital Lighting & Rendering by Jeremy Birn.

Also check his website at www.3drender.com

There are tons of tips on the net.

I use brazil r/s from www.splutterfish.com, great/free/fast.
