View Full Version : advice needed: extrude command
Titan 06-30-2002, 06:32 AM Hi, I've bought some books to get me started with maya, and I've been working through the help files and tutorials, I'm beginning to get the hang of the modelling toys which I really enjoy.
my question is this(forgive me if this has been/is covered somewhere)
is there a way to quickly access the extrude command when poly modelling without having to navigate through the menus at the top....
As far as I can tell, after I use extrude, then the manipulator switches to move, scale, rotate....then I have to navigate through the poly menu to get back to the extrude command again....is there a way to map a button or use a hotkey to quickly access the face extrude command?
Also, how can i convert nurbs objects to a polymesh?
again, forgive me if these are basic functions and I'm just sounding like a moron, I've only been working with maya for a week now.
thanks in advance for any help....
:p

after you use the extrude command , hit the "g" ket everytime you wanna use it. "g" invokes the last used command.
or make a button on your shelf by crtl + shift +left clicking on the menu item.
for your other question , go to :
edit > modify > nurbs to polygons

or you can make a hotkey for the extrude tool
OR you can make a custom marking menu... i personally recommend this, I've set up a custom marking menu for all the poly tools I use.

you may also like to set your nurbs extrude to automatically output poly geometry for you ...to save extra steps if your making them a lot.

I'm new to maya - coming over from max, and I've set the extrude key to alt-e, which is is a good one.
A question for Kruger though - how do you make a marking menu just for polys... like, in maya 7 there are some poly options already, and that comes up from RMB... do you assign a marking menu to another command, or replace the one that exists?
I know there is an option to do it, but can you talk about yours a little bit so I can get some ideas?
I'll swap this for a little tip... it's probably easier in Maya 7 to find the edge loop/ring select tool and start using that for edges and whanot.... but if you mess around you'll find that if you have a edge selected and use 'convert selection to ring/loop' it will just give you a loop without having to swap into using a tool and then out again.
Much faster, and you can just tap a key and carry on - I thoroughly recommend it.
This is the way I'd work in Max - ie. Id be using my normal selection/move tool and select edges then just press alt-l to loop.
EDIT: Also, is their a way to contexualise key commands - like if I am in edge component mode, alt-e will extrude an edge, or in face mode it will extrude a face?
