View Full Version : realistic 3d character: louie
benfalcone 02-13-2004, 11:59 AM here's something ive been making the last week or so, made in maya with std rendering (using g.ijoe for lighting) - some glow added in photoshop to try and smooth the skin out
havent worked on the ear shading yet but wanted some feedback on the feel of the skin shader, im using fake sss (painted maps in a toon ramp shader) not sure how well its working
modeling crits appreciated as well! - plan on working on the blendshape a lot more but im about done with the std head
thanks for looking

The model looks great.
The opening to the ear canal looks small, or the earlobe is too big. But I've seen ears come in all shapes and sizes. I see two five-sided polygons at the top of the forehead. Sorry, I've got to find something to critique!
I'm not an expert in texturing by any means, but I noticed that there is something funny at the base of the skull in the back, and also the top of the forehead. Is this some of the wireframe showing through (paint on top of a wireframe when creating my textures)?
It seems as though the UV's are stretching a bit at the base of the neck and maybe under the jawline. The bump map resolution seems to be dropping off here compared to the cheeks.
Looks good, though.

Hi!
Model looks good. I think the funny stuff tfall is talking about is either a smoothing problem or your vertexes arent welded together at that point.
I think you should give him a proper adams apple, thou, and his throat muscles (from ear to chest) should be shown more.
Now, his throat area looks a bit too smooth I think.

The skin shader is (IMHO) too "waxy". Really nice fake SSS!
Try with real SSS, and maby add a skull and simple muscle tissue under the skin?
I think that the ear stands out from the side view, as if it would be a separate model. The ear is the only miss, modellingwise.
The wrinkles look a bit "chiseled out" If you know what I mean. Try using a displacement map for such things.
The facial propotions in general are very realistic. Thumbs up!

I think it's going great and would like to see an update with some of the comments taken into account. He kinda reminds me of Moby.
