hi all,

a few months ago, i did a lot of searching here about getting a
new computer and thanks to the help from the members here
decided on:

cpu - P4 2.6c
mb - asus P4P800 deluxe
hd - Western Digital wd800jb
mem - 2*512 of pc3200 (either corsair, kingston or ocz)
case - with 400w (is that enough?)

(using Maya only)

unfortunately, i was unable to get the computer then but
my finances have changed, and i'm now ready to buy again.
but i'm worried that i might be buying a computer on old news.

so my questions are:

1.) is the above mentioned system still worth while getting or
should i be changing a few things... i figure i should upgrade to a
2.8c or 3.0c since the prices have dropped a little

2.) should i be looking at getting pc3500 (433mhz) memory?
would there be an improvement considering the motherboard
is Dual DDR 400 memory (sorry i'm not that familiar with the tech stuff)

3.) if i got 2*512 of pc3200 (corsair) and i wanted to get more
in the future... do i have to get the exact same thing or would i
be able to add on 2*512 of pc3500 (corsair)
or for that matter 2*512 of pc3500 (of another brand)

sorry for all the questions, it seems that the more research i do
on computer parts, the more confusing it gets.

thanks in advance, again

I'd definitely bump the processor to 3.0 or 3.2. The price difference isn't that great.

The board is still decent. Depending on the money you have allocated, you could up it to an i875 motherboard instead of an i865. (Slight performance difference).

However...you've now landed yourself right in an Intel transistion phase. Intel's new processor (prescott) has just come out.

At the current time, its actually a bit slower then the P4's, but this will change as the speeds ramp up.

Though starting in socket 478, Prescott will be moving to Socket T in a few months...and as you can imagine this is going to require purchase of a new motherboard to support this socket, and quite possibly a new case if the board conforms to the BTX standard.

So if you had to buy now, probably a similar configuration to what you already have, just with a 3.0 or 3.2C.

PC3200 should still be fine...but since most brand name memory dimms are just a few dollars more for PC3500, what the hey. Always better to have more then you need, then less :).

I'd always try and keep the memory types to brandnames, same type/speed if possible.

You don't "have to", but its usually good practice. When building a workstation, one should always try to reduce stability variables.

A 400 watt psu should be sufficent for a Single Pentium IV. You could probably go with a bit less, but if you've got a 400 budgeted, then go for it.

I recommend the Antec TruePower psu's.

hey Greg thanks for the response,

it's discouraging that i'm getting "older" stuff,

but i guess that's the way the ball bounces...

i can't keep waiting (afford)to get the newest and best...

hopefully the above mentioned system won't become obselete
too fast.

oh one more thing, the case i'm deciding to get is not a brand
name, the only reason i'm considering it is because it's cheap
at about $50 and it's 400w. i'm not too concerned with looks.

does the old saying apply here "you get what you pay for"
or would this type of case suffice?

i just worry because there seems to be a big difference in price
from brand name cases and the "bargain" cases

thanks again.

You can get an antec case with power supply (namebrand) for around the same price you mentioned for your no name case.

ANTEC Solution Series Case with 350W Power Supply, Model "SLK3700AMB" -RETAIL

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-129-122&catalog=7&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=1

17 dollars more for quality :). Don't skimp on the case or power supply, they always outlast the rest of the computer.
