....wow.This was *exactly* what I was looking for.

After going through just about every tutorial on the net, reading endless amounts of Maya PLE manual, practicing with PLE for 2 months, and reading Maya 4 Fundamentals and I had pretty much mastered the basics. I just got the full version of Maya and Master Maya 3 and I must say: This book rocks my socks! It is detailed enough to be usefull for someone new like me but doesnt hold your hand enough to make you just skim through everything. At over 1,000 pages with lots of theory, hands on projects, and detailed explanations of the advanced features and tools this book is awesome.I highly suggest any fellow newbs ready to move past the basics get it!

dude,
funny thing this life...the book is good but i had to do just the opposite of what you did...look on the net for more and better explanations...and there's a diffrence/thin line between not babysitting/taking you by the hand and glossing over every feature and then saying hey !!! hands on excercise.
i think jim lammers(maya 4 fundamentals) has forced the competition to go the cg video way...which till today was only in the domain of private studios who could afford to buy professional pal/ntsc videos.
fortunately for us and definately for the guys getting into cg there are better days ahead...learning will never be more easier and acessable.
back to the maya book...after religiously going through most of the chapters i was literally going to sleep and had to reinforce the knowledge by just blustering through and most importantly getting a production point of view from these and the highend 3d forums.
which brings me to point out another amazing book though not maya based...mastering 3d max 4...by kim lee and others .
the principal behind this book was if you havent used it(any 3d max tool) in production dont write about it !!!...kick ass i say, though definately not for starters it's a god sent for people who want to get productive with the tool rather than just play around and complain(just go to the max forums...wear an anti flame jacket though :) ) .
educators will have to change the way they look at their profession.
my 3d sifu said to me "b...the greatest gift you can give/teach a student is to teach him how to LEARN"

mumble,mumble,ramble...
