well weta apparantely is using maya on linux i hear. so i guess it works. as far as drivers, your best bet right now is with nvidia. they've probably put the most effort to get their cards working properly on linux.

I've been using maya on linux for awhile now. Nvidia has great driver support for linux, I can't vouch for others. For me maya has been very stable, it's only crashed a few times for me in the last few months.
Installation was a breeze, just istalled the RPMs, installed the license, was ready to go in no time. Ive installed it on Mandrake 8.1, RedHat 7.2, and Gentoo linux, all without problems.
Performance wise you can expect it to be on par with it's windows/irix counterparts.
All in all very good:thumbsup:

Also Maya should work well with any window manager that allows you to change the Alt+Mouse key combos so you can navigate in maya. Kde, Gnome and quite a few others work good.
And yeah there are quite a few places switching to linux workstations and renderfarms. Weta, DreamWorks, some others I can't remember off hand.

I tested it on redhat 7.1, i was happy.
Now i'm slowly leaving windows for linux...
Nvidia driver works well, a lot of software and games are incoming...
This page talk about maya for redhat :

thnx for the very good link :)
I'd highly recommend hiring someone who is LinuxConf certified to help you with the migration, and or buying Linux systems from Boxx technologies, SGI, or Dell configured for Maya. Since this is for a paying project and all.
