View Full Version : MAterials with Skylight
Chaosphere 02-11-2004, 04:28 PM HEy, I am rendering in MAx 6 with skylight, i should prolly use mental ray, but i have to learn it first...anyway, is there a way to make surfaces look shiny with skylight, instead of that dull look... are there certain materials i have to assign for this... ???:hmm:

If you are using raytraced reflections, then you will need something in the scene to reflect, eather something dark that blocks out parts of the skylight, or something that is brighter than the skylight. Otherwise you will be reflecting one solid colour and no reflections will be noticable. Or you could use an HDRI as the skylight.

Skylight cannot affect specular.
With that in mind, objects cannot have that fake shiny look.
So the only way and the best is to put an HDR Image to the skylight to be casted as a color, as gjpetch suggested.

Its easy with Mental Ray, just assign a DGS Material (physics_phen). Here is a image I threw together in like a minute. The only light is a Skylight.
If your wondering why I chose Teapots its because they have always been so under used that I just wanted to give them a chance.
