Only Mental Ray can render HDR images, and you just use them in a normal file node.
Usually, if you want the HDR probe look, you surround the scene in a HDR-textured sphere (or dome) with primary visibility turned off. Then turn on final gathering and turn default light off, and render. FG samples should be around 300 at base, increase as needed. Measure the length of your scene in Maya units -- length/10 is the max FG attribute, length/100 is the min.
Happy hunting.
