wow... I feel like a huge burden has been taken off my back. I remember back 4 months ago when I started this artwork. I got half way into it then my tablet broke. I got my new tablet recently and now I have finished it. wow it feels great! 44 hours of work!!! And to think I was trying to get it done in 20. This was a great experience and I have learned so much from creating this artwork. It's my new favorite and I hope you like it too.

tip top!!!

Welcome to the forum. I don't know how the 4 people who saw this before me didn't say anything.
This is well done... I look forward to seeing more of your work. Just one crit though. Everything is so well done... then it seems you duplicated the upper most ship. Just change the the jet stream curve or something.

I love good sci-fi space art and this is really nice! My only real criticism is that there's so much going on that there's no one thing to focus on.

02-09-2004, 11:10 AM
Hey that's great. :D
It's true that there is no real point to rest on but well somehow the starting spaceship is somehow such a point. i think thats ok. I don't want to rest on this picture anyways i wan't to see all the little things going on in there :)

Cool can't wait to see more :bounce:

Very Very nice chaotic, making it very hard to focus..becourse there alot of chaos....But i think That that's what make's it very intresting to look over and over again to figure out what's in side the Artist mind...your very promising no doubt

Told ya you'd get quite a bit of replies if you posted here :). I'm glad you took my advice, because you'll pick up a lot of fans and hopefully some crits and tips from the real pros and masters out there.

I'm lucky if I get like 1 reply... then again you're also a million times better than me, and you're still 18 like I am :buttrock:

Was this piece created for anything in particular? I'm just asking, because it seems like an odd shaped canvas to start out with...it's really effective though!

Great work! I wish I had patience to do such things. I think the chaos-feeling is about the overall quality of the picture. Usually there is just one spot in the picture (the focus) that is well made. But this.. this is just amazing!  five stars from me

I love the fact that this piece doesnt have one particular thing to focus. Who says you HAVE to have a focal point. Its the chaos that make this piece interesting, its like looking out the window of one of the spaceships.

I like it. Great work!

All I haveto say is that I'm impressed becasue I have certain visions of that sort and can understand what's going on... not going to criticize the technicalities or anything I like it so that's all that matters :p

I especially like the firey glows of buildings burning or whatever, the ships are neat, and the blue/dark space like back is mysterious, the whole structural aspect of the 'city/base'whatever' is just great.. I appreciate it anyways.

Amazing!

The detail is awesome and the color choices work beautifully together. I get so bored with the majority of sci-fi work these days because they all seem to come from the same place, nothing new. But these pieces stand out from the standard. Great job. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

How many photoshop layers ? 356

WTF???!! Can you (or anyone else) explain why you would need to have so many layers?? I can understand using layers to isolate and mask background/ foreground elements, effects maybe etc. but :: 356 :: WHY??

Also, isn't there a way to cut that file size down thats insanely big? What methods do other people use to manage file size when working on a digital painting that big??

That being said, amazing work man- your like a young Ryan Church- keep it up!:applause:

I got more space for my pictures now. SO they should be up for for a while. Why do I use so many layers? I like painting every big object on another layer so that I can reuse stuff later and move it around if I need to. I did all the lighting on another layer so that if I change or add lights I simple just edit the lighting layer. Same goes for all the texturing and shadows. I don't always work like this but lately I have been doing it. Thanks for commenting everyone

Have you considered adding your image to zazzle.com? I am afraid to buy from deviantprints because I don't know the quality, and at zazzle you can print on canvas AND they use archival ink. I stopped buying posters that don't use archival ink because of the inferiour quality.

ChrisMayernik
02-10-2004, 11:21 PM
So nice of quality. believe me. I got a 30 x 20 inch print of my artwork " hope ". I was just blown away when I got it in the mail. I had no clue it was going to be so nice. It is good stuff.

"deviantPrints utilizes all silver traditional photo processing, the same that you'd see in a photo finishing shop. We print on high quality Fujifilm Crystal Archive paper, which will last over 100 years without fading "

Holymight

Sounds like they use archival ink too. Nice thing about archival ink is that it is very vibrant and makes the piece come alive.

ChrisMayernik
02-11-2004, 12:11 AM
Yes, I name all the layers. I organize everything into its own layer group. It helps me keep track of whats where. I am working on a walkthrough of this artwork. so far It has 4 pages. It will explain everything I did to create this artwork. I will post it when I am done.

nothing to focus on. i think the main problem is the spaceship you have highlighted in the second image. that spoils the picture. other wise you could focus on the smaller ship.

edit:

i also agree with the lame comment. when u see the preview on the main page it seems cool. then when u see it it is LAME. and the author of this thread is pointless. all hes looking for is people to cheer and clap.

its nowhere near the quality i have seen on other works. i ive it 6/10 - being generous.

If this is 6 out of 10, then according to your value's 3/4 of all the work on this site is 'Lame' as you put it. The author of this thread is pointless? He's posting his work, and asking for suggestions. I dont think you need to slam him like that when most of us cant do work as good as his. If he was looking for people to cheer and chap, I'd think he would be more arrogant. But isnt this why people post on this site, for other people to show how much they like their work?

You are generous......that must have hurt to wrote this. One thing i want to see from you is what can you put on this web site that could be better than the work shown here on this thread. You have the right to give your opinions but if there are nothing to back it up....then it is pointless and very childish too. When people ask for help and they get bash that is childish to me.

Every work posted on cgtalk is open for constructive crittics.

Just calling something "lame" is not very constructive. Saying "there is no place to focus in this piece" is though, if you agree with the crit or not.

Telling Chris he is only looking for cheers is not very constructive either, and after reading the whole thread, I have to say: also not true.

Cool down please people.

Thanks.

That is absolutely gorgeous. No ifs, ands, or buts.

Chris, one question: Have you ever played the game Homeworld 1 or 2? The two banking craft (fighters? bombers?) closely resemble the Hiigaran Interceptor (http://www.relic.com/images/ship_bible/hgn_interceptor.jpg), and the large transport vessle in the background resembles, well, a large transport vessle from the game.

Not that the resemblance is a bad thing, I'm just wondering.

Oh, and as soon as I get some cash together, I am getting one of those posters. It is just beautiful.
