Now if A Perfect Storm had been released a few years later than it was, ILM wouldn't have had to write their entire system on their own :)

Its windows, if you look close enough you can see a minimized IE window on the taskbar, plus a few other programs I recognize that are Windows only. Looks like either a litestep or windowblinds theme using Object Desktop for the task bar or something. Plus you can tell its windows by looking at the paths in Visor :) DOH! I didnt even bother looking at it first. Personally I dont like the theme anyway, but that Ocean menu looks fun to play with.

surely its windows with some interface enhancer....

hmmmmmmmmm.......... one thing i have noticed in the bottom left corner...is to browse through the internet for sample fluid examples for downloads........WOW:eek: thats great just like XSI can do with in its window.....

Well would maya be having a html viewer fixable in a viewport????????

And also that ocean is just like the one in perfect storm.. i love that...........

When this version is coming????????

ACFred

You can fix an HTML viewer in a port window now. There is a plug-in developed to show the API capabilities of Maya which uses Internet Explorer embeded into Maya. I used it all of the time when doing tutorials.

It's up on highend3d, of course, so check it out if that feature is of interest.

By the way, the out of the box wave creator for Maya 4.5 just blows the socks off of the Arete Natural Effects ocean effects. Plus, Maya did some really nice things to help maintain real-time speed using the wave effects by creating little animated chunks in the middle of your viewable ocean instead of animating the entire thing in the interface. This way, you can look at this little postage stamp animate, get a really good idea of what the overall results will be without bringing your computer to a crawl, as does the Arete ocean with it's tons of polygons.

For all of those wondering if 4.5 will be worth the upgrade price.....it is. Do it. A couple of nice poly additions, sub-d to nurbs (rocks), voxels (again, rocks). If you're a professional, these additions will be worth every penny. Now, where's my penny jar.....

now THIS is what i have been waiting for...... SCREENIES ! :)

And hotdamn, it looks cool (the rendering), i wonder if you get that result just by doing DEFAULT settings :)

I wonder how the rest of the program will look like (and if there are improvements)

I noticed that MAX 5 has a build in standard toon renderer, and it would be kick-azz if maya could do the same along with a standard vector (flash) renderer , instead of the shockwave output...

Mikkel Jans

4.5 will have a new Ramp Shader which also is very good for creating Toon Shaders.

Offtopic: Anyone know what's the name of that shell extension? :)
I once saw, and was about to download, something similiar, but it seemed like too much hassle to set up a new shell for my trusted old 2K, so I didn't do it... but now I'd like to give it a shot :)
I think it was named something "lite", or something...

I don't know if the animation is from Maya Fluid... But i think Fluid is build on the same concept made by Joe Stam with Voxels.
I have tryed fluid and it got some relly great smoke simulation. it's Relly Fast and interaktive.
You can define coler from Temperture, Pressure ect..

Hi Everyone,
New here and had a question that pertains to this topic. I am planning on purchasing Maya Complete and was wondering if any new enhancements were being released in the 4.5 update to MC. I plan on purchasing in the next month or so and was wondering if there was any advantages to waiting for 4.5 to be released. Hopefully the new price structure will remaing the same. Anyway anxiously waiting for some clients to pay me so I can purchase Maya and want to get the biggest bang for my buck!
Thanks:wavey:

Br0nZiLLa, you must have visited the 3rd Dimension board to get my screenshot  ...i'll go ahead answer some of the curiosities...

1) you're right, it is litestep/windowblinds running on a win2k system, P4 1.3ghz, 768MB RDRAM, geforce4 Ti 4600. the theme's called "Slim" i've been working on for a coupla months, it's only made to resemble the linux "blackbox" window manager...i'll probably make it available at litestep.com if there's any interest

2) this is one of a few of the ocean fluid presets that came with the beta, i beleive one frame took over 2 hrs. on my machine...if there's any interest to see some of the other presets, i'll be happy to render a few more (they also have the fire/cloud dynamics which are extremely cool too)

MadS
07-01-2002, 09:56 PM
That took you two hours to render one frame? It took me maybe 3-4 minutes to render just one frame. I even rendered out a 48 frame sequence of that same storm preset at 320x240 and it took around 30-40 mins I believe.

The Foam algorithms look a bit unrealistic... too uniform and kinda low resolution, but who cares! This is a step in the right direction for Maya. I will have a blast playing with the Fluids, for sure. :)

In my experience Windows eyecandy like that hogs memory and resources, and is almost certainly unstable. No way I'd be using that if I was doing any serious 3D work.

what about the polygon toolset. after taking a look at max5 on CGC i'm beggining to realize just how lacking maya's polys are. has it improved or could some one just supply a screenie of the poly tools at work that would be awesome

Wigaru Wiyamoto

Maya's poly tools are just fine. The only problem is that SubD's are only in Unlimited. Complete users need the ConnectPolyShape script. And for Maxer's whove grown fond of Meshtools, there are now the excellent MJPolyTools to tide you over.

Hm... I'm using Litestep now for some days and for me it was
real stable and memory usage isnt high (got ~1.2 Gig Ram, i've got
enough :p)
If I experience any probs I'll deinstall it, but at the moment
i love the non-windows look *G* :buttrock:

-wT-
07-04-2002, 11:24 AM
Yeah, Wigaru you haven't really seen the crappiness of explorer then? I can tell you that this M$ shell is a memory and CPU hog, and is quite unstable when it wants, I've always had numerous problems with windows, always relating to explorer.
Litestep isn't actually anything more than some modules for controling the windows, and you can easily make it look like explorer, but with lower memory and CPU usage, and much more stable than explorer.

I think you'll find that that smoke movie wasn't made in maya4. I saw that movie about five months ago on henrik Wan Jensens site: http://graphics.stanford.edu/~henrik/ Check in the animations section or under the smoke section.

Here's a clue. Jos Stam is a co-author with Henrik Wann Jansen on that smoke research. So I would expect Maya 4.5 uses the same or similar smoke algorithms.

2 questions:

will Maya 4.5 have a revitalized smoke system? I am reading talk about new smoke, but i haven't seen or heard anything about 4.5 having anything new besides oceans.

Does LiteStep eat resources, or are you okay working with it even while running Maya? I've got a Dual 1GHz PIII, ATI Radeon 8500 128MB, and 512MB RAM.

Litestep eats less resources than explorer... unless you load it with hundreds of different modules, but normally it's much better than explorer

guess you've never done much research on litestep then...it doesn't enhance the windows gui, it replaces it. it's open source, so the coding is much tighter than M$ (the same coders who put flight similators in their apps for the sheer hell of it). like what was stated, it can be as efficient as desired since it's module based. i've used it for a few years and wouldn't go back to the explorer shell- think of it as mel for the desktop.

In case you didnt get the mail, pm or what ever I sent you:

Is a release of your "Slim" theme planned?
I visited your webpage but there was no date or something
to be found - I think you would do any litestep user out there
a great pleasure if you release it.
I've used several (better numerous *g*) themes but by the
look of it your theme looks very very nice :)

PS: Yep indeed - it definitely needs far less resources as the
standart micromess..ehm microsoft shell and it can look DAMN cool

good point. i'll end it here by saying no release date is set yet, but check litestep.com for future development (post on the "Slim" screenshot over there for questions/comments instead of here!); the scripting is not complete yet, but i just added the option to use desktop icons w/ the deskfolder2 module for those used to it...thanx for the interest everyone :)
