ThorFury 02-06-2004, 10:40 PM Howdy folks,
If you've been looking for an excuse to create talking cheese, here's your chance!
I'm a recent convert to C4D after having used Animation Master for the past few years to make a little web series called Cheese Wars. There's a new episode in the works - the script is done, the voices are recorded and some of the sets were modelled in AM before being transferred to C4D. The problem is I'm back in school and that's kind of cut down on modelling and animating time. So I'm throwing myself on the mercy of the CGTalk forum: would anyone like to help out?
Character modelling is job one right now, but if you want you can animate, light, rig, rewrite the script, compose a soundtrack, make posters, cater, coreograph a dance number or even be best boy. This has always been a decidedly non-profit, one-man show, so you won't make any money. But you will end up with the undying adoration of the half dozen crackpots who call themselves Cheese Wars fans. And maybe even a nice Hickory Farms gift basket.
Below are links to the last couple of episodes, and the entire series can be found at www.cheesewars.com. If you're interested, drop me a line at gwrennNOSPAM@att.net (obviously cut out the NOSPAM part). Don't use the e-mail listed on the website, it's broken right now.

Hey gregg. Daniel here. Did you get the 2 models i sent you? sorry for the big size, umm i also finished the monitors stack which i am proud to say is very low poly and i also finished the table ,so all thats left is the storage cabinets and the sink ,then i can get started on the animation. may i ask how you guys do the talking/lip-synching done cuz i watched one of the episodes (actually #13 so i could get into #14) and the lips werent even attached to the characters ,so did you just composite them in post production?

Hey everybody, check your e-mails if you haven't already.
Daniel: the mouths are 3D too, they're just a separate part from the body so they're hardly attached at all. The eyebrows also float free. I like the look of the eybrows when they can jump off the face, but the mouth is another story. When I first made these guys I was brand new to 3D and couldn't figure out how to give them a mouth that wouldn't distort the rest of their body when they talked - one of many drawbacks of characters without heads. Before making episode 12 I toyed around with giving them a proper mouth with a tongue and teeth and everything, but it was just too big a change to make in the middle of a series.

Hey jay,
This is the escape pod, right? Good start. Could you push those two chairs closer together and make the whole thing pretty cramped? If you remember the end of Alien, Ripley can barely move in that little ship. Of course, our version needs to fit four characters, not two but we want to keep it tight (be sure to put in four chairs).
If you'd like to use some of the pieces from the other sets - like monitors or control stations or what - let me know and I'll post 'em on the website. Also, you were looking for some shots of the exterior of the pod. I'll capture some from the movie tomorrow and send 'em to you.
As for texturing, if you've got some ideas go ahead. If you haven't already, take a look at http://www.cheesewars.com/ep14/stills.htm to see what some of the other sets look like. I've got a bunch of animated decals to use for digital displays and stuff so you can leave those blank for now if you want.
Looking forward to the rest of it,
Gregg

Hey fellas,
Now that we've got a core group going, let's try and use this page for most of our communication, just to make sure everyone's in the loop.
We should start thinking about animation and what we're going to use. As far as I know, everyone here has C4D and Mocca, right? Osadkid, I think you do, but let us know for sure (by the way, did you get the reply I sent about the refrigerators?). I'm not a big fan of Mocca but the Bonderland plugin is coming along pretty nicely. The problem is it's in beta now and aside from the natural worries about using a beta, nobody knows when the actual product will be released. When it is, the beta will expire and everybody will have to purchase the full version, which just shouldn't be a requirement for volunteering on a free project like Cheese Wars. Any thoughts on how we should do this? Better yet, anyone else have messiah?
For those of you working on interior sets, I've got a bunch of animated decals that we can stick on computer monitors and display screens, so you don't have to worry about that. As for other texturing, I've posted some stills at http://www.cheesewars.com/ep14/stills.htm of the sets that I've already made. Those were in a different program however, and the textures didn't transfer with the meshes. So if someone likes texturing and wants to do things like standard walls/floors/rusty pipes/control panels, please do. Otherwise, we'll just match the old ones in C4D.
Thanks,
Gregg

Hey jay,
That's looking great. Just one thing - at the end John, Jack and Mel are sitting in the pod when the alien turns up in the turned around fourth seat. So can you make it two rows of two seats instead of 1 row of four? It'll be a little easier to hide him that way.
I'll post the animated decals on the website, but each one is a targa sequence so it'll be a bunch of large folders that I'll try and zip up. Do you have a fast connection?

yeah sure can do, but dont see the layout you describe on the visuals i downloaded from the link, there appears to be 3 chairs on a row split by an isle in the centre, with a 4th somewhere else maybe.... hhhmm will think about it

moved the desks closer, split the ones on the left, made the left of the room darker by the farthest desk, and given it a swivel chair, getting closer:shrug:

Hey jay,
Are you building the bridge you saw in the stills? That's from the big ship and is featured in the beginning of the episode and it's already done. What we need is the escape pod/shuttle at the end of the script. I'm sorry, that's my fault - I should have made it clearer.
But I like what you've done so far, the two should look alike if they're parts of the same ship. Keep what you've got just make it more scrunched together so it looks like a cramped shuttle. You can have two control stations like you do now up front, just put one seat in front of each, then have one more seat behind each of the two seats in front. Here's a blueprint. The airlock hatch doesn't have to be anything fancy, just a cube sticking out of the wall. That's where Jack throws his gun out at the end.
Sorry again for the confusion, I should have made it a lot clearer.

Very nice stuff guys.
jayreef, the escape pod looks great, just two things:
1) Can you put a joystick on one of the consoles and an auto-theft Club on the joystick? If you don't know what one looks like, go here: http://www.theclub.com. Make the joystick and Club separate objects.
2) The seats and the door in the shuttle need to be wider because the cheeses have really big butts. The door doesn't have to be big enough for them to actually fit through, but make it a little bigger so it looks like they might actually fit through it. The seats do need to be big enough for them, so check the Jack model file you downloaded before to get the right proportions.
I captured a couple of shots of the outside of the escape shuttle, but these were the only ones in Aliens and yours doesn't have to be an exact match of this one. You can just use your imagination for the rear end, but I'm pretty sure there are two large cone shaped engines sticking out of the back. If you do need more references, I'll try to find my copy of Alien.
substrauss, that's a hell of a nebula, it's a shame to consign it to the background. Is that Max or Maya?

Some debris would be cool. How about making it a little more stringy, as in make the gaseous tentacles extend a little further out and make the bright spot in the center smaller.
And if you haven't already, check your e-mail for the Sulaco model and animatic.

Nope, you can keep them separate. If you could put a hatch on the exterior that they could run into when they first enter the escape pod, that's all we need.

Hey jayreef,
Great job on the interior, I can't believe how fast you're throwing all this stuff together. If you finish the exterior of the shuttle, try putting together a shuttle bay set. It's only in one shot, so it doesn't have to be anything fancy. Just a big room with a big door for the shuttles to exit through (make it able to open and close), a smaller door for the cheeses to come thru, a control station or two and some computer monitors and pipes in the walls. Make it big enough for two shuttles and three cheeses at least.
Thanks,
Gregg

Beautiful job, jayreef. Just have one change and one question. Try making the engine nacelles either black or a dark grey. And any chance you could add a simple set of landing gear? It doesn't have to move, it's just for when the shuttle is sitting in the bay.
Don't worry about slowing down, we're already moving faster than I expected. Thanks again.

Sorry fellas, didn't mean to let it get too quiet. Just had a busy weekend with lots of school stuff.
Does anyone like rigging? I've been putting together Jack in Bonderland and adding some facial controls. BL is nice, but it still takes a while to set things up. But then maybe I'm just spoiled from working in AM and messiah.
jayreef, we don't have any big stuff to model anymore, but there will undoubtedly be little props and stuff to add as we start animating.
For those who want to animate, we should be able to get started as soon as the characters are all set up, although substrauss is already working on the opening shot of the Sulaco in space.

Hey jayreef,
Want another project? It's not exciting, but if you're looking for something to do...
The set files imported from AM are way too polygon heavy and will probably end up slowing down the animation and rendering. They are mostly just basic shapes so it would be cool to replace most of them with C4D-generated shapes that will speed things up. If you want, I'll send you the OBJ files and you can redo them, maybe even tweak some stuff if you want.

Not so much right now. I've got a test tomorrow, but after that I'll start pumping out animatics. Anadin and Osadkid are still working on their models. Any progress guys? It looks like we've got three new animators and another modeler who are interested in joining up too.
There was a problem with Scottish Mel's lines - they've been corrupted and I can't find the backup CD. I'm trying to get in touch with the guy who does his voice, but no luck yet. If I don't hear from him soon, we'll have to find a different voice.

I have not tried that yet ,but i wil instal it and see what i can do, ill take a couple of tuts to see how the interface runs. And im guessing that animating is pretty much that same in all high end products ,so i should be fine, anyways ,how do you like the doors for the fridge and oven ,i also added every thing you said into the fridge and oven models. ,i have a finished model of the kitchen going soon. Just gotta do the sink and the cubbords. I made a small animation. 12 seconds long ,you can get it at... Hey Daniel,
I know how it is with tests, we just had a big one today too. They really get in the way of what's truly important, huh? Like animating. I didn't mean to count you out of animating, but wasn't sure if you wanted to do it. I was originally planning on animating in C4D, but after trying to set up characters and animate over the last couple weeks, it looks like we're going back to Animation Master. If you want to animate in C4D, though, it shouldn't be too hard to combine them. And just so you and jayreef know, the C4D models transfer to AM pretty well so you're work won't go to waste.
The kitchen video looked pretty good, but it was hard to see what was going on with the sink. Is it on its side? I like the way you made the oven and fridge open, that was a cool touch. Keep up the good work.
jayreef - Sounds like you're a glutton for punishment. There are still some props to model, but nothing urgent. Come on back when you're not so busy and I'm sure we'll have something for you to do.

Hey Daniel,
You don't have to get AM just for Cheese Wars, the last thing anyone on this project should be doing is spending money to be involved. We can give you and anyone else who wants to help certain scenes specifically for C4D. The kitchen scene or maybe the coridoor scenes since it would be cool to have lots of steam and atomspheric lighting there and AM's not as good as C4D in doing those things.
What I thought was the sink was actually the monitors, it was just hard to tell because of the compression. Can you post a jpg still, so we can get a closer look at them?
Thanks,
Gregg

Hey eldonaldo,
Thanks for the peek at your ship, it's a beauty and that animation is incredible. Looks like you've got a hell of a movie going there. Like I said, it's a great ship, but at this point we don't really need a dropship. If we end up needing one, I found a model of the actual Aliens dropship which we'd use beacuse this Cheese Wars episode is an Aliens parody.
Thanks again and if you ever feel like joining the Cheese Wars crew, you'd be more than welcome.

Hey Daniel,
Actually that's the original Alien model I made a while back in AM and never got around to finishing. That's why he's just a shadow. Thanks for all your work on the kitchen, I'm looking forward to seeing it. Just out of curiosity, are you doing it in Max?

Since we're getting close to animating and we don't want to spoil the episode for everyone, we're moving to a Yahoo group
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cheesewars
Anyone who'd like to work on the episode is welcome to join.
Thanks,
Gregg
