Hi everyone, this is my very first thread (they say it's painful the first time, but gets much better the more you do it...)

Anyway, here is an image from a short clip I'm working on to add to my demo reel. She'll probably end up looking considerably different in the end from what she does now, but I wanted to get some feedback. Critiques, criticisms, and ego boosts all welcome. Thanks,

- Me

Looks good so far, can we get a shot that show's off the geometery a little better though. The dramatic angle makes it kind of hard to critique. I'd work on adding more detail to the textures. Will she have hair? Isn't a Succubus though a vampire, not a devil? I could be wrong here? She would still look nice with some fangs.

A succubus is a female demon that does you in your sleep.
That explains wet dreams.

Thanks for the comments, Rhid1en. The depth of field on the image is blurring out some of the detail, but I do still have a while to go before I finish all the texturing. She will have hair when I'm finished too. Any recomendations for hair style? Also, I'm pretty sure Succubuses (Succubi?) are demons/devils, but I guess we'd have to consult Tobin's Spirit Guide to find out... (look everyone, a Ghost Busters reference!)

I'll post a new image that shows off more of the model soon. Thanks again!

Here's an OpenGL preview render of my progress, folks. I added a collar and got rid of the bolted-on look for the horns (although I'll probably keep that for an alternate version on a poster or something.) None of the textures are final. Advice?

Hi everyone!

popnGEAR - thanks, I'll put some skin wrapped at the base of her horns so that it looks more natural.

Here's another OpenGL shot. I've made some more progress on the body, although there is still a ways to go before I'm finished modeling. And then to animating... and texturing... and rendering... etc, etc, etc. What do ya think?

I'm not much for bald succubi...I prefer them to look more like Capcom's Morrigan. As far as crits go, succubi are supposed to be temptresses, so give her some more sex appeal.

Here's the original concept sketch that I drew for this character. I wanted to steer away from the more typical depiction of a succubus, and give her a bad-girl look. Kind of like a cross between a biker-chick and a girl you'd see on MTV Beach Party. ;) I'll probably end up doing multiple costumes in the end. Any suggestions? More updates soon...

Hey everbody!
It's been a few days since I've been able to work on this model, but now I've gotten the chance to put some more time into it. Here's a detail shot of one of her hand's rendered with radiosity. Her gloves are pretty much done now. On my to do list:

1) add more detail to her pants
2) change the look of her shirt
3) add a tail
4) make the spot where the horns and head meet more natural
5) hair will come last, probably after the animation is done.

I love the style crits, so please, keep them coming! I would also like some modeling crits too: anything look weird, sloppy, or out of proportion? I'll post some more pics soon. Thanks all,

- Me

Here's my latest update, the finished head with skin folds at the base of the horns. I also added a tail and will be posting a render of the body soon. More updates to come, so bring on the crits!

On a side note, Forrest has recently posted a really cool model of a devil girl on this forum (seems like everyone is doing them these days...) He's definitely going for a different concept than mine, but the quality of his work is still an inspiration for me on this project. I have to admit that his model blows mine away at this point, but that just gives me more incentive to do better! Go check out his art:

Here's a shot from behind of my character (or "my daughter" as she's come to be known... heck, I've put more time into making her than the average man puts into making a child...)
Anyway, the modeling is just about done, except that I'm going to change the style of her shirt. I know that her boots are over-simplified, but they'll stay as is for now, since they won't be on camera. More close-up pics coming soon. Any thoughts?

Nice very nice :) but at this stage she doesn't look devilish (for me anyway) . Hmm I think you should make her face less round - look at Glen Close in "101 Dalmatians" (i don't know is this a proper english title ;) anyway she had to loose her weight to make her figure more "sharp". More sharp = more evil :). About clothing... look here (http://www.blackrose.co.uk/) i think you should find some nice clothes for her :)

Ah i almost forgot. generaly all succubus have bat-like wings.

PS sorry for mistakes ;D

I'm not sure how dressed a succubus would be, as I remember them as the female sex demon, coming to rape men in their sleep..
But apart from those details, it's coming along nicely! ;)

Thanks for the remarks, guys!

Stefan Pruss: I know what you mean, and I would eventually like to do several different costumes for her, some much more revealing than this one. Nudity is a part of fine art, but since this is for my demo reel, I thought it best to keep her clothed. Trust me, I'll be giving her some sex appeal when I animate her.

demich: Thanks for the link, those pics will definitely come in useful when I design additional costumes. Oh, and you got the spelling of 101 Dalmations correct.

damon579: I can't wait to see her with some hair either! ;)

Here's a detail shot of her belt and naval. When I get to texturing I plan to add bump-maps of carved designs to the heart and round studs. More pics to come!

I still need to work on the shoulder and elbow deformations. Oh, and in this pic the head isn't nurbed. My birthday is tomorrow, (thank you, thank you, etc.) so I'll be chillin' and probably won't have another update here until next week. Hopefully by then I'll be able to post an animation. Hmm... nice model. but as far as my fantasy knowledge goes, a succubus is naked, but her nipples and private parts are not visible cause they are covered with scabs, and most have long hair with no horns, big ol' wings and long nails. but thats just what me and most of fantasy thinks so its not important. nice model though, add a bump map to the tail, looks too smooth.

Okay, after some time off here's an update of my progress. Below are the main key poses of my animation. Note that in the scene the camera is rotating around her, so she is constantly turning to face it. I should have the animation (untextured) up soon, so stay tuned!

Also, thanks for the comments everyone. It's good to get feedback from a wider variety of people than just my friends. As was pointed out, there are slight imperfections in the hands (among other places) but I'm hoping that textures will help cover that up. Now on to the great experiment... hair!

Hey, this is looking great. I really like the hair. Are you going for a feather based hair ala the Andorians in Star trek? I think that feathery hair against a reddish demonesque skin would be quite cool.

sanhueza
08-21-2002, 07:47 AM
Here's some more views of the hair. I'm amazed by how much it changed the look of the face (at least to me anyway.) I know that the shadows look a little dark, especially in the left pic, but with the lighting setup that I'll be using for the final render it should look right.

http://www.sanhueza.com/posting_images/evil_hairtest_2.jpg

DJ Bindhi: I'm glad you like it. I was going for a feathered hairstyle, but not feathers per se. I agree that giving her feather-hair would look really cool, but I'm going to try for normal hair this time around. Who knows, like everything else, maybe some day...

Here's my texture work on the hair. I was going for shiny and soft. Haven't seen it yet on the actual model, that's rendering out as I'm typing this. Considering how far away the hair is from the camera in the actual animation, and with motion blur applied, I think this might be good enough. But feel free to crit anyway!

GReat work  She's nice and pretty, and she's got nice brest :bounce: . Personally I would change the horns texture coz it's seems like plastic to me now. The hair texture rox, if you get the whole model textured like you did the hair It'll be great. Keep posting :buttrock: .

Crash
08-25-2002, 11:40 PM
The animation rox as well, but the reson why I'm posting second time is that problem I wanted to point out with the shoulder. In the part of the animation when she twist her arm to kiss her hand you can clearly see that the shoulder is wrongly deformed. Just something I noticed, dunno if you did that intentionaly.

Crash

I think that you're wrong hellrender, I agree about the weird angle, but why already remove the thing that makes her interesting, can't it just be fixed? Without those horns she's going to be just a next normal gall. I think she's very sexy and the horns just spice her up, can't wait to se her whole textured

Yeah, Crash, the shoulder deformation isn't quite right. But it's as good as it's going to get, since I wanted to focus more on the animation aspect rather than truly realistic deformations.

Yiorgz: I use LightWave for all of my modeling and rendering, and some animating, but character animation I prefer to do in Messiah. It's just more flexible, has a much faster OpenGL response, and is generally much less agrivating. :) In Messiah I didn't use musclebones for the abs, but I have several controls for the spine. I like to rotate the hips in one direction, and then rotate some of the lower spine controls in the other direction, creating swiveling movement and a nicely deformed belly. I'll post a screenshot of my character rig in Messiah soon.

Also, how is the animation industry in Australia? That's one place I've been thinking of moving to. Regards,

I'm not sure what you mean by the shoulder area needing "more softness." Do you mean a softer look to the surfacing? Do you mean smoother deformations? Do you mean an overall rounder shape to the geometry in the shoulder area?

Anyone have texturing advice/ideas for this character? Thanks,

Thanks, looking forward to seeing it. I've heard lots about Messiah, but never really looked into it for myself. I don't think I've really pushed LW7.5 enough yet to be aggravated with it. (well I have been pushing SasLite a little lately - boy that thing is real finnicky about settings...)

The animation industry in Australia, is like the US, only on a much smaller scale.

It's a nice place to live in though.

In one of George Maestri's books, I saw a partial rib-cage built out of bones.

I can see how it would keeps the upper torso more rigid in animations. You can rig all the ribcage bones to make the character breath more realistically. Using the multiple muscle bone technique (as shown on www.lwhub.com) you could make some pretty controllable abs too.

It's funny, the more I study this, the more I realise to get more realism and control, you almost wind up simulating all the bones and organs already in the human body.

Mother nature / god / buddha / evolution / etc... is one kickass modeller/animator - damn good at expressions too.

Yeah, but the render time really sucks! I mean 5 Billion years? Come on! :)

Actually, I do have the partial rib cage with muscle breathing bone set up in her upper torso. This is probably also partly responsible for the the look of the abs. I'll post a screenshot soon.

Thanks for posting the screeny. I like those little headphone type things. Do they show angle of rotation for an axis ?

Just saw your blaze animation. It's looking good.

You doing the fire effect in LW or post using the depth buffer ?

I think the camera is moving too quickly for the mood. Slowing it down could help let the shake provide more contrast.

The camera also seems to stop before the shake happens. I think it could keep moving while the flames come down the hall and finally the shake could overlay on top of the camera movement.

Looking forward to seeing some more when you get some time.

sanhueza

Yiorgz: The black "headphones" control the rotation of the head, and the pink ones underneath that control the rotation of the neck. The blaze effect was done in post in AfterEffects, using a depth pass to overlay the glowing render on top of the normal render. The camera shake was also done in AfterEffects.
More to come...

I had a thought about the animation, actually. I dunno how finalized your camera movements are, but I'd have the camera gradually begin to shake as soon as the flames appear and then increase in amplitude as the flames approach until it gets to the point where it's just going nuts. It'd convey a better since of the power of the flames. I'd also make them darker to suggest a more menacing flame.

I'll do some mental crunching on texture ideas.

Keep it up! It looks great :) Oh, have you finished the hair? I'd really like to see that mapped and rendered :) Anyway, good stuff!

Very nice model! But i would use the white version, not the black-skin-version. As a gothic i just love the contrast of pale white skin with black cloth... Plus the face does not look like a black woman's. So stick to the white version or change the face a bit when using the black skin. Otherwise it looks quite strange to me.

Gabriel: The skin isn't black, it's red. Yeah, pale skin against black is a nice contrast, and her clothing was meant to be goth-like. But I didn't want her to look like just some normal woman with horns stuck on. Red skin fits the character more, and it's all about who you are, not what you wear! ;)

Hey Dave!

Looking absolutely fabulous so far, but there are a few things (other than what you mentioned) that might need a little work. You probably include them in the animation fixes you mention, but some of her movements seem either too exaggerated or too jerky, especially where her arms are concerned. Might want to look at that.

I'm terribly sorry about missing tonight's meeting (assuming it happened...). I wanted to come, but I had a disgusting amount of homework to do (you can thank Visual Studies for that :p ), so I couldn't make it :( I'll be in the lab ~11:45 tomorrow, though, if you're there.

Succubus, a demongirl who does you in your sleep....COME ON!!!!

nibo and why should everybody model normal humans? It's just boring, I mean how long can you model plain humans when it's much more fun to model a sexy demon :p don't you think. Oh Sanhueza, you've got a real preatty daughter  . Waiting for some thrilling animations ;)

Martha Stewart? :surprised

nibo: I don't know why so many people seem to be modeling demons lately. I started this thread a few months ago, and back then I think I was the only one, but soon after alot of other people started showing off demon and succubus characters. I'm not saying I started the trend, it's probably just a weird coincidence. The main reason I decided to make this character a devil-girl was kind of an accident while I was playing around with skin shaders for my "human" girl (seen on my webpage.) I accidentally put in a negative value for something, and the skin came out a high contrasty red. I said to myself, "Self, that skin would look great on a succubus. Wouldn't it be nice to give her horns and a tail to go with it?" And the rest is history... ;)

Crash: thanks for representin'!

Ok, now I know a bit more about your succubus story.
But then again, you feel me too?

I plan on doing more with this character when I get the chance, including more animations, and some still prints (posters.) In the meantime, any ideas for texturing? Any animations you'd like to see her do? Merry Christmas to all!

Aerestis, I'm glad you find it awesome in the awe provoking way and not the surfer way. Otherwise I'd have to drill a hole in your board...

Here's another render, without post work. More to come!

Looks good to me :) Only issue I see is that there looks like there could be some pinching going on where the arm meets the torso...not sure.

Off topic, can you e-mail me whenever we have those LW UG meetings? I never can remember when they are :hmm:

Hi there, sanhuenza!

Amazing job so far, but I think you could add more details to the clothes. And also, on this last picture, the left shoulder of the background figure looks strange...

looks cool.

Thanks. I will be adding textures later, so that should definitely bring more detail to the clothing. I haven't had much experience modeling wrinkles, a la Final Fantasy, but I eventually would like to do that too, especially on their pants so that they don't look painted on.

You're right about the shoulder, it's a deformation problem from the extreme arm positioning. I'm pretty happy with it for now though, since I've seen even the pros have alot of problems with shoulders. Just another thing that I'll have to learn how to overcome later on down the road.

Oh, GoodieBR, I forgot to ask you something. I've been thinking of moving to Brazil at some point (after learning Portuguese of course.) What's the animation industry like there? Are there many people doing work for games, TV, or movies? Are you a student, a hobbyist, or a professional there?

Sorry for so many questions, it's just that I would love to live in Brazil for awhile, but especially if I could do there what I like to do best. Oh, and if I could do animation while there that would be cool too....

I'm not sure whether I should tilt the characters a little, to match up with the background. I'd also like to add a little bit of texture and reflection, to make this look more like a photo of a small statue in a museum. Feedback welcome!
