Let's say I have a poly sphere and I want to select one of the rings that form the sphere. Is there a way to select just one of the edges and it will automatically select all adjacent edges that form the ring?

You can play with the Select Contiguous Edges option in the edit poly menu. This will allow you to select an edgeloop. Theres some scripts on highend3d that work well too.

And Mikkel Jans was very nice to make some poly tools for us. One of which selects edgerings. Take a look in the thread MJ Poly Tools in this forum.
