i want an area to receive shadows from a light but not illumination .....with the shadow casting radio button in the include/exclude you think this would be easy but i cant get it to work.....im not a newbie but am i being thick here?....i could do it with matte material and composite later but this seems like a really longwinded way to go about something so simple

You can't have a light casting shadows that doesn't cast illumination... not the default way, but here's a lovely cheat.

Create a light, set the colour to White. Set the Multiplier to 0. Turn on Shadows. Go the Shadow Map parameters, make the shadow colour white - then set the Density to -1.0 (you may want to change this number to stop getting overburned shadows).

Hope this helps,
