View Full Version : TREES,toon shading,leaves
quaife 02-04-2004, 06:20 PM Hello, newbie here,
I have a "TREE" animation question.. and tried to find resources, but could use some guidance...
I'm working on a indie little film (very low pay)
www.julyfilms.com
mostly drawn animation, but one important scene needs trees/ leaves blowing in breezes as we pan across..
I KNOW 3d would be easier than drawing this, and the " look" could get where the director wants it, with toon shading..
I can use Lightwave, and Maya as resources.
Can anyone reccommend modeling, and animation approaches for trees, for an indie film , with limited budget, and a toon shaded look.
Thank You for any advice!

I can think of a few ways to do this...
If you wanted to supply me with more information on the scene I can probably give you some suggestions since it depends on the details...specifically if the leaves are going to be blowing off the branches of the trees and if this is visible in the animation. And if you are going to show leaves being pulled from the branches how many?
A few leaves you could probably keyframe...
A lot of leaves and you would want to use a particle system.
Also, Is this for your "My Little World" movie? Is that the style you are trying to repoduce in 3D?

hello thanks for your reply.
Yes, this is for My little world. Mike Nyguen has been a friend for many
years, and since the traditional market is so slow I've offered to help
with whatever he needs, just to contribute to his film. Since I am a
traditional effects artist
www.quaife.us (site is not ready for public consumption, but you get a
sneak peek at who i am at least)
So...
Mike handed me a scene to animate with clumps of trees swaying in a
gentle belt breeze,
the trees are in masses in a long shot, big masses, with branches swaying
and leaves blowing off in the breezes.
Here is a quick sketch to show you the basic twofield composition we pan
across.

I'm willing to do this in traditonal (draw it), but more interested to
experiment with my elemetary 3d skills, as long as it can look 2d . Most
of the trees I've looked at in 3d look very 3d in the render... Must avoid
3d look, but all this deatil would be great to control with a digital
modle instead of a thousand drawings.
i want to do a cycle so they can cut to what ever length they need later.
looked at windstorm plugin. its a mystery to me, but I'm willing to learn. no technical advisors for a gal alone in a corner at her house. so THANK YOU.
