Interesting trick, a nice variation on the make-your-mapping-fit-you-gizmo-rather-than-the-other-way-around theory.

Jep, when I saw it.. I thought of how easy and many different ways you can edit the "morph like" objekt.. ex. if you have a head. you can easaly edit the mesh around the nose so you don't have these stretching...
It's also shown on (I think it was this site...but I think its closed :( )

Well, I have always edited my mesh prior to applying mapping then morphing it back to it's original shape. Some manual tweeking and some localised SO Relax-es usually allow you to avoid overlaps and whatnot, then I follow that with an unwrap to fix the stretching. It was the FFD trick I liked though, letting you tweek the UVs underneath the morpher is cool.
