Heya all,

Thought I'd do a little scene composition and take a break from modeling. Here's a few pics of some of the 2001: A Space Odyssey stuff I did. I'll probably do some more as time goes on, and I make a few more models for 2001.

Comments/Suggestions are most welcome
:)

They look nice, but something I would do, is light the ship according to how it was lit in 2001. Movie effects weren't what they are today back then, and the ship appeared bright white on the screan, almost like a light.

Also, with the jupiter background, I would create my own texture in a good paint application like Painter (Painter Classic, Painter 5-6-7 whatever is the newest version.) Of course it would be at least 4000x4000 for detail's sake.

Other than that, I can say they look okay.

Artistically speaking, I rather like the shot of Discovery by Jovelight. It also foreshadows the sulpher-sooted Discovery in 2010 rather well... dunno if that's intentional.

Being a picky, picky person, I have to say there's wayyyyy too much ambient light. Shadows in space are sharp and dark.

Got any wires of the model? And which software did you use?

Ok, I went back and lowered the fill light settings in both of the Discovery pics and reduced the film grain settings a bit.

Thanks for the feedback folks, much appreciated.

That Discovery model would look so cool exploding...

What did you use, btw?

hehe Bog,.. sorry I didn't answer your comments earlier. I don't have a wireframe model at hand, but I can tell you I made this model heavily detailed although its hard to see that in these pics. Check out the WIP thread (here (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9428&highlight=2001))I had for this to see the model by itself.

I'm using 3ds max4 for modeling/rendering

That's a very nice rendering, Dave. It's Doctor Kaminski, isn't it? You're certainly improving....

*twitch*

Beautiful detailing on the hull. How many hours did you slather over that one, then?

One of these days I'll get 'round to doing the Discovery-destruct sequence from 2010 as the shell of superheated gas from Jupiter's detonation slams into the hull... slow things down so the wavefront takes about three, four seconds to march it's way up the ship.

Mmmmm.... glorious destruction...

hmmm.... Nope I'm really Jason, but thanks anyways...

You don't want to know how much time this model took. Alot of it was spent getting adequete reference material. But it was fun, and I will probably do more 2001:ASO stuff in the future.

Great idea bout the destruct sequence. heheh wish my fx skills were better, hell i'd try and tackle it!
