View Full Version : Car-to-human transformation
Tuqui-tuqui 02-03-2004, 06:42 AM Hello everyone,
wanted to show you something I had worked on last semester. Here is the final product:
Final (3.95 MB Sorensen3) (www.cgandlive.com/colorc.mov)
And here is the original footage:
Original Footage (6.55 MB Sor3) (http://www.cgandlive.com/origf.mov)
And the first cloth render on top of the footage
First Render (2.73 MB Sor3) (http://www.cgandlive.com/mayacloth.mov)
Software used: Maya (cloth), AE (for most of the post work) and Shake (I'm still learning this little program). C&Cs please, I would really appreciate them into making this a more belieavable piece

Generally speaking, try and keep the same background all the way. The light in the background changes at the same time as the car changes into the man, which makes it real easy to point out exactly when the change occures. You need to push the suspension of disbelief further! :)
You might get better results if you work some more with the 2D morph, you can see the crossfade between the cloth and the human and their locations doesnt match. Those are two of the obvious things :)

The light in the background changes at the same time as the car changes into the man
Can I blame it on the crazy Miami weather?
So, here two things so far:
1) Change background light (as well as some fading in/out between trees and leaves)
2) Cloth-to-man morph
On the first one, I'll get started tonight and I'll post the work tomorrow. Any other C&Cs?

Well, the shadow behaves a little strange, at one point it stretches out very far, and at the end it simply disappears. It might need to be smaller and darker as well, try and match the shadow under the car, after all it's the same object casting shadows throughout the sequence, it's just changing shape

the shadow definately needs to be darker. I think you should also consider making the cloth the size of the man's coat at the transition and add some legs coming out from underneath to match up with the mans legs. Cut him up and use his extremities to make that transition instead of just fading between.

Thanks for the tips guys!
Well, here is the first change. I had a chance to work on it today so I fixed the background light and got started on the morph.

I'll post more updates probably during the weekend.
Hey i like this one alot!
I do miss a couple of things tho, first off, the shadow when the car has completely transformed into the coat.
Just a simple plane with a shadow underneath it would do the trick i think.
Also, the leather covering the car looks a little small.
Becoz of the low specular values, it seems as though its just a very small piece of cloth on a toy car.
I think that if u up that specular a bit, so it shines more, it would look much better.
Finally, i think that u should give the halfway transformed car, when it looks folded, a bit more weight to it.
Right now its easier to see that the transition is a morph, becoz it doesnt show off the weight that the car showed in the beginning.
I hope this makes sense btw, i stioll like it a lot!
Goodluck!

Thank you Xeno for you suggestions.
I hid the layer with the shadow because that will be the last thing I will work on. Right now I wanna get the morph just right. But I noticed like a little jump in the cloth-alone and the man-in-cloth. I know there's a jump (a bit too sudden and more like a snap) but I can't find it in the timeline!!!! It's frustrating me!
Anyhoo, here you go:
These files keep getting bigger and bigger (Sor3 8.2 MBs) (http://www.cgandlive.com/test2.mov)
Any C&Cs will be greatly appreciated
I think i liked the previous version better.
Now that i look at it again, i see that its not so much the specular, from the previous version, but more the fact that the cloth itself is static.
It doesnt move like a real piece of cloth on a car would move.
Perhaps u should give it some dynamics, it should ripple a bit, as though the wind is playing around with it.

Looks pretty damn nice . However, I think you should brighten up the image some, and darken the subjects, so as to give a better sense of contrast but to also reduce the error-catching we do. The transformation looks rather well-done, but I don't think it's quite so '80s simplistic (what with the car shape and all). Try to screw around with Maya and find a good fluid blob shader/deformation that makes it so the "limbs" of the car correspond to the limbs of the human. I know you're all done on this, but that's just my crits. Good job nevertheless!
