Back to a more classic exercise topic for this one, running till friday 6 feb. Hands, feet, human or not, any style.
1-3 hours models (ref search, shading, rendering not included), show unsubdivided wires and different views, tell what soft you used.

Have fun!

Great topic m@, funny yesterday when i gave up on ideas for the antique warrior session i started my own hand speelmodel. This is the progress after about 1 h 15 m. I'll finish it off with another 1˝ h when i get home from work an edit my post with the latest progress. I hope to see some nice wires in this one, especially feet which i find hard to do.

Cool!
I like the speedmodellingtopic. Very usefull information here about topologystuff.
As I have to model a comic hand now, I´d like to participate!
I´m not good in speedmodelling, never practiced, but let´s see, if something good happens in my editor.
I´ll start now and will come back here in 3 hours....:wavey:

Mine is developing still. Here is where I am now (I know I´m slow and bad, but I have the courage to post my work here... ;-) )

I find your hands a little narrow, don't you?

OK, Time Up!

I had a 10min phonecal, so 3 hours are over 10min later, now.
I rigged the hand, tried to paint maps but failed bcause too much polys in too short time. But deforming is OK (could be way better, but hey, I can move the fingers!)
Here it is, what do you think? It´s my first speedmodelling and my first hand/glove (forgot the nails) ever.
Made in Cinema 4d 8.5

I had to remake the hands for my mole (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=114341) so this subject was perfect for me..

lightwave 7.5
3hours modeling, 20min PS touchup on the wire.

Here is the hand from my main character on my current film. It took around 3 hours, maybe a bit less, with a bit added later for finger nails. Obviously, the texturing time didn't figure into that and was probably an additional 4 hours for texturing.

Comments always welcome.

Swag, your foot looks good but the heel has some problems. The achilles tendon in the back there kind of archs into the heel which rounds out just below the bump on your ankles, not sure what those bumps are actually called. But my point being, your heel is kind of pointy. The foot also looks like its of somebody with flat feet, kind of like it needs a bit more arch on the outside edge. Can definitely see that Stahlberg inspiration in there though, ended up very similar to his tutorial foot. It's too bad he doesn't partake of these little sessions.

tonfarben, your hand needs a bit more meat to it. It's kind of thin and spindly. That can work if that's what you're going for, like fellah's, but it looks like you're going for a more human hand. The fingers are kind of pointy at the end as well. Also, I dunno if it's too appropriate to do the middle-finger salute there, but that's just me maybe.

pur9e, I like your hand but the palm is so fat! I'd just suggest pulling in the meaty sections on the bottom of the hand leading up to the pinky-finger and the meaty part leading up to the thumb. Looks good tho.

Egyt, looks good, no crits.

fellah, looking good as always. Very nice and stylized. I have two suggestions. First, the wrist leading into the hand is so skinny. I think you want that, it fits with your model for the mole, but I think it could be fattened just a bit, looks a little unnatural but perhaps it'd be fine when married to the rest of the model. Also, that meaty part leading up to the pinky, looks like it needs a few edges pulled out to round it a bit. The top shot where you can really see that part well looks like it's just a bit squarish.

----

This is an excellent session. Easy enough that everyone can participate and do some good work but still fun.

3,1 hours modelling, vertexpainting and rigging.
This one is better, I think. More flesh, better deforming, less Polys. All Quads, modelled in C4D 8.5
Sorry for the middlefinger in the last post, I didn´t want to hurt anyone. This time I chose the classic heavymetalfingers to show deforming.

Thanks for that timelapse!
There is a lot to learn from it for me.
For example: I modelled each finger, instead of copying one. And I don´t have the fleshy part below the fingers, I just have the two others, thumbflesh and the flesh of the outer hand. Next time my hand will be better:)

WhiteRabbit,
thanks for your crits, really appreciated! I agree with most of them and will fix it before I attach them to the mole.

about your hand.
I think it's a good one, texture looks great! but it looks a little flat, atleast from the angles you showed.
especially the parts on the palm. the thumb-connection, and the part under the pinky(the part you critted on my hand) a little more definition there would be nice to see.

the middle joints of the pointer and long finger down to the connection to the palm looks a little to thick compared to the rest to. but you might want it like this..

swag
nice foot! I was going to comment on a few thing but noticed those things where fixed in the thread, doooh... :) nice job!

here's another one from me.
I reused the geometry for the palm from my previous post, but tweaked it to fit this male hand.

Fellah kanon!

No crits at all! but I'd like to know how you did the nails, are they separate meshes or are you shaping it out of the fingertips geometry? Closeup would be nice as I think they look great and mine never does, and yes, with flames plz :].

Holy cow Troy, that's one crazy ankle!

Thank you as well for the crits Fellah. I agree the meaty parts of the palm need to be fattened up on my hand. I learned quite a bit when I made that hand as far as form and I had originally modelled it too flat. I was having problems getting it right tho when I was working on it before so I figure I will fix it the next time I have to make some hands. Also, with the two fingers having fat joints, that's because it's modelled after my hand which I scanned as reference and I've cracked my knuckles for many years which leads to fat knuckles :). Looks fairly natural to me but I think if you haven't had exposure to someone who cracks their knuckles it might look a little odd. I'll definitely be changing that around on my next character, but this whole char I was working on was modelled after myself.

it was supposed to be 'stylized' plus it is my first foot, so that may explain the craziness. But the foot is intentionaly large, and the ankle is supposed to be thin, it's more of a caricature really.

Egyt,
hey thanks. you can find a few closeups and wires beolw. pretty simple. the wire looks almost identical to your fingers, just a few tweaks away.
hand closeups (http://www.fellah.net/temp/SpeedModeling/SpeedModeling.MaleHand.1.2.jpg)
sorry for leaving out the flames, I dont know how my friend does his magic, and he won't tell! next time.. there will be more flames than ever though! I will pay him to do it if he refuse..
great looking hand you made btw, the main shape is definitely there, just a few more tweaks on the nails, and a lil more work on the wrist and it will be perfect.

WhiteRabbit,
oh, leave the knuckles as they are then, looks pretty okay afterall. the main problem was the flattness of the palm. but thats just a few vertex tweaks away.. :)

Thought I'd have a go at this one :)

Maya 5 about 2.5hrs work. It's by no means perfect, I think some of the proportions are a bit out and some of the details - as they stand - are a bit dodgy. It's my first proper go at a hand so I guess it's not too bad :)

Hot. I was immediately thinking comic book from the pose, the line along the back of the thumb is wonderfully expressive of the genre. On the model itself, all that bothers me is the thickness of the fingertips vs the rest of the finger, and the non-quads, but as for the latter, I am neurotic about quads for some crazy reason unrelated to how things look.
