It is also very easy in Max. Simply select your mesh and apply the "skin" modifier to it. From there go to add Bone and select all the bones you want the skin to be affected by. For adjusting Skin you can use Edit Envelopes which will give you gizmos to manipulate and will show you the influence of that bone on the vertices. Add Cross section will let you place more points to manipulate on the envelope. If you are using Max 4 remember the skin will respond to how well your bone size matches to your mesh, so that you do less work adjusting envelopes.

Is there any way to just select a certain amount of vertex points and skin just those to a specific bone?
\
also is there a way to reassign points to differnt bones once theve been skinned
in maya there is a thing called edit membership
as for the bone size
what exactly do you mean
my apologies fpor the amount of questions but as a new user im finding the transfer from maya to max not as smooth as i had hoped for
THanks

Once you have your object skinned go to Edit Envelopes and in the viewport select the bone you want to affect. Then go to the bottom of the Parameters rollout where it says filters. Turn off the other filters and turn on Vertices now you can select the vertices. Select a row of vertices and go to Abs.effect under Weight Properties in the Parameters rollout. As you adjust the slider you'll see it change color and changing the influence of the bone over those verts. Hope that helped you.

In Max 4 bones are not just helpers you bind your skin to they are actual geometry. So bones can be scaled up just like any other object in Max. In your modifier tab you can adjust it size and add orientation fins to it. The skin will respond to this if your bones are small the envelopes that are generated will be small. So try to match your bone structure proportions to the proportions of your model. It will help in skinning and it's a great reference of your model. Good luck.

http://www.s21net.com/meshtools/ get this plugin. and be sure to use editpoly not editmesh :bounce: this is what u need. :bounce: btw with the cut command u might wanna use snaps, but with the plugin above u dont need cut :applause:

you may also wanna bind the meshtools commands to some keys on your keyboard
when you do that in a smart way you can get an AWESOME workflow in max, i have done that a few days ago and it's speeding up my work a lot (for example keys 2-4 for devide edge, 'c' for connect edges and so on)
the freedom in ui customization max4 gives you kicks ass
