I want to animate a cloak in 3ds max 5.1. How can I go about doing this? Also do a model the cloak apart or seperate of the character?

You can try using Simcloth, character and garment should be separate objects, being the body a deflector... its a pain to get the values right tho...also u should play with a soft sellection under the Simcloth modifier, so u dont have to make the all garment a soft body, way faster to calculate and less chances of the simulation go wrong.
hope it make any sense.
do a search on the Max forum, on cloth, sure there are a few threads on this subject already.

good luck

I'v done a lot of tests with cloth simulators for max, i personally don't think any of them are good enough, in the end i settled for animating the cloth by hand, with bones, i have 100% artistic control and it's much faster, ok it doesn't move like simulated cloth but it is good enough...
