i was just wondering, when people model do they usually use reference images in the background, for everything? like even for a little thing like a mouse or a teacup? i'm just starting out and it seems pretty hard to just guess things without the blueprints in the background, how do you do it?

people just starting out should always used reference blueprints (in the viewports) to work from. Most experienced people do this to, especially when duplicating something. Blueprints will only take you so far though, usually to help you get all of the basic shapes, forms and volumes correct. After that it takes other reference imagery (photo's etc) to get the details done correctly. Its at this point, your artistic eye will be more important.

btw, just because something's small, it doesn't mean that blueprints are't useful :)
