Developing a good character is something I flat out stink at...

I've stuck to mostly traditional styles of art over tha past three years...doing landscapes, portraits, still life ect in lots of diferent medias.

Well now that I've got the summer off I'm back to drawing for fun and not for a grade hehe. The best I can do though is open up a comic book and copy something out. Afterwards...I'll think to my self: it looks great but it's not mine!

Now I've got all sorts of how to books on comics and such including the Marvel one but I'm already familiar with all the techniques and such taught in those. What I'm lacking is the skill to think of my own character. Does this make me not creative? I don't know...when it comes to this sort of thing I just get brain farts lol. :)

Any tips? Where to start? How to design my own character w/o blatenly copying parts and peices off of other characters? :D

Any help would be appreciated. :)

difficult.

maybe you should think of things you like and don't like. what is your mood? dark soul? joker? always happy? hateful? sad? depressed? express your moods! what kind of pictures do you like? towns, landscapes, woods, scifi-environment?

develope your imagination. create surroundings you like, create a situation and afterwards think of the ideal or totally wrong (could underline the scene) character design for the scene. if it's raining, maybe an defective umbrella fits best. stormy? create a pose that reproduces the weather.

look into yourself and you'll get inspiration.

The way I started with creating my own characters was trying to re-design a comic of movie character, giving a new hair cut, cloths and some new weapons... This way learned how you can build up a character. My skills as an artist are still improving due to looking how other peeps it do and to see if I can do that to!

As wachting movies and reading books and comics really give me inspiration... for instance: Try to draw the persons from a book you are reading, this really helps!!!

Succes!!!
