Hello-

I'm struggling to find the easiest way to create convinving and clean depth of field in post.

I've endeavored to render RPF files out of max, bring it into after effects, and use the 3d channel. Alas, it's pretty dirty and doesnt offer many feathering options.

I'm having trouble bringing RPF files into Apple's Shake - using ZDefocus or ZBlur doesnt seem to recognize the Z depth channel, though i know it's there because i can view it through the "View Z" viewer script.

I originally thought there was a way to create nice depth of field by rendering (via max) 2 separate images, a standard RGB and a Z-Depth image, then using the Z image as a device for correctly blurring the RGB original. I'm still struggling to find the best way to do that. The thing i like about that is the file size - considerably smaller than a RPF.

If anyone has any suggestions on the best way to do this, i really appreciate it. If you have any pointers could you describe how to do it? I'm still adjusting to the post software, especially Shake, though i have experience with After Effects.

Thank You!!!
Chris

Check out the Blimp tutorial in the shake manual. It explains everything your trying to do.
