First of all, this is NOT for somebody who has never touched max before. You will need to know your way around the UI, as well as the Editable Poly tools.

I start the tutorial off with the blueprints already set up. If you don't know how to do this, here's (http://www.onnovanbraam.com/index.php?m=tutorials&g=blueprintsetup) a good tutorial on how to do this (I also got the blueprints from that site).
If you already know how to do this and/or you're too lazy, here's (http://blitzze1.t35.com/) the Max file with everything set up.

I will leave the materials, lighting and the rendering up to you, as I'm no good at any of them :)

There are numerous accessories I didn't make in the tutorial: windscreen wipers, mirrors, gearstick, etc. by the time you have done the tutorial to the end, I would assume you would know how to make those;)

You will need the DIVX codec (http://www.divx.com) for these videos, and the Glue (http://www.itoosoft.com/english/download.html) plugin

MuseSyndrome

Yes of course there's going to be a part 2:)

Forgot to mention: You may notice I use hotkeys extensively. The main ones I use are (off the top of my head): Cut, Target Weld, Weld Selected, MeshSmooth Modifier, Create Poly (from existing vertices), Hide Selected/Unselected and Unhide All

I'm by no means a professional at this sort of thing. I just do this for fun so sorry for any 'unprofessionalism' I display in my vids:)

Wow.. these videos are excellent! Even better, it uses many of the same techniques found in the very popular Fiat500 tutorial (found on 3dtotal.com). So, I would suggest grabbing all of these videos _and_ reading through (and doing!) the Fiat500 tutorial.

If you are a true newbie like me, the videos will move a bit fast, especially if you don't understand the difference between things like extrude, bevel, and inset. However, if you mess with the Fiat500 tutorial in combination, you'll have a very solid foundation. The only place I started to get lost was when the video began messing with the headlights... however, you get 4 chances to figure out what he's doing (headlights, parking lights, taillights, etc.). :) By the last one, it all clicked into place.

Can't wait to see more (if more are coming).

it worked for me... Downloading.. can't wait for it to finish!! I suck at car modeling

MuseSyndrome
02-01-2004, 01:16 AM
Thanks Daagar

Yeah sorry about the headlights:)

What I basically is cloned the headlight interior face and detached to create the glass bit. Then I used Edgeloop Selection (is that what it's called?) to select all of the edges and then Shift-Extruded it back. Then I capped the back face and chamfered the edges to make sure it doesn't smooth too much. I do this instead of creating a new box because it's more accurate and doesn't require too much fiddling.

If you get lost, don't hesitate to ask.

MuseSyndrome
02-12-2004, 02:00 AM
izzodizzo: Lookin' good:) . Don't forget you can chuck in a Symmetry modifier nice and early to make sure everything looks right. Make sure you put the Meshsmooth above that, otherwise it won't be smoothed properly.

Jokafex: I must've forgot to put this in the first post, silly me. You need the DIVX codec (www.divx.com) to play them.

Blitzze what can I say but that was 1 hell of a tutorial, you did lose me at a couple of points, as you were doing things so quickly I had to do some rewinding. Well being new to this whole 3d scene this vid tutorial was great, maybe your next 1 will have sound. Thanks for your help. This is my first car model I have made, infact its probably the first model I've completed. Oh and it took me a whole day which is pretty bad I suppose, but I'm still learning.
Thanks again, Vyper

MuseSyndrome
02-16-2004, 02:34 AM
Thanks vyper1:)

First of all, welcome to the 3D scene, hope you enjoy your stay:beer:
Great work on that model, it being your first one and all. I know my first one was certainly nowhere near as good as that. One very important thing about modeling, that is: take your time (unless you're a few hours from a deadline, of course;) ). If you're planning on doing a good job on a model as complicated as a car, prepare to spend weeks, even months on it.

As you probably know, that model is far from finished. Check out some photos and compare it to your model (mirrors & windscreen wipers being the main ones). But don't get too carried away adding detail though, as you'll always see one more tiny thing that can be tweaked, and this can seemingly go on forever (maybe it's just me)

And no, I don't think my next one will have sound (if I am actually going to do one). If it will have sound, then it's just going to be me talking to myself for several hours.

Cheers Blitzze:beer: Yeah its my second attempt at modelling a car, it always puzzled me how to do certain parts. But your tutorial highlighted these areas. Do you know what? I never even realised that it had mirrors missing, I guess thats how good a tutorial it was, I was so caught up with it that I didn't even notice these things. Ok catch ya later, I'm going to see what else I can model for it.
Vyper1:)

Great tutorial! Sound would indeed be great, there are times when I see you do things I don't understand until 2 vids later :)

Just a tiny question, what's this "Glue" tool you're using in Vid 9? Can't find it in my max, I'm supposing it's a custom download somewhere?

Next tutorial? *gulp*

Anyways, good job vyper1, but it seems to be missing some lights in the front intake, I think I forgot to make those in the tutorial.
The materials could be a little better (mainly the car paint, it's too bright, which obscures some of the details), although it's probably better than what I could do;)
I would suggest looking up some photos and copy its colour scheme

Despite all that, it's a damn fine first car, that's for sure.

Great vids. Thanks for the excellent work :)

Right now, i'm only at the beginning vid two, and stuck on the front grill. There you select the 2 polygons making up the grill and do something (a hotkey?) to make it one big polygon.

I've pressed any button on the side panel, without the desired effect. What function did you use to combine them? :)

Kopingraaz - Looks very nice:buttrock:

eddienz - Thanks!

Hardly any of the shortcuts I use are defaults. Since I model a lot in Editable Poly, pretty much every key on my keyboard is a hotkey for some tool;)

Some of my hotkeys:

Attach (Poly) - A
Back View - B
Cap (Poly) - Y
Convert to Editable Polygon - P
Create Polygon (Poly) - R
Cut (Poly) - C
Detach - D
Front View - F
Grow Selection - G
Hide Grids Toggle - I
Hide Selection - H
Hide Unselected - U
Material Editor - M
Maximize Viewport toggle - X
MeshSmooth Modifier - O
Remove Edge (Poly) - E
Select-By-Name Dialog - N
Target Weld Vertex (Poly) - W
Unhide All - L
Weld Vertex (Poly) - S
Zoom Extents All - Z

I use 1-5 for sub-object selection (default) and of course, my favourite: Ctrl-Z;)

If you're not sure about some key I used, don't be afraid to ask.

Select an edge, hold shift and drag.

Thanks for taking the time to make these vid's Blitzze. I've watched the first 5 learned alot and now I have a question.

I can cut in vents and things around the car easy enough, but what if I wanted to make a square or triangle shaped headlight enclosure? Everytime I increase the iterations of the mesh it makes my square enclosure round. I've tried chamfering the edges but it just makes a sharp edged circle....does this question make any sense?

Jeff

PS - if this has been covered in one of the video's I haven't watched yet....sorry!

I want to add a cutout like this for the lights on my model.
http://pb.actipage.com/img/items/item_1792_2f.jpg

Do I cut this shape in AFTER I've increased the iterations of the mesh or can I cut this shape in while the car is low poly?

MuseSyndrome
03-14-2004, 04:49 AM
Ahh I know what you mean. I prefer to always make everything in a low-poly mesh (i.e. never collapsing the stack). You can do it any way you like, it's just that I prefer not having a lot of vertices on my screen.

Have u converted it to an editable poly?
Right click --> convert --> edi poly

hobz
03-16-2004, 10:08 PM
Yea I have .... and I selected the right edge, and then I clicked the move tool, and held shift as I moved it. I don't know what's wrong. All it does is moves the edge, it doesn't extrude. Blah, I just tried using editable mesh instead of poly and it works. Is there a difference? But now I got it as far as the body from the side done... and now it won't let me extrude the vertexes from the top ... ugh ?

Newbie here.....

Great tut! I allowed me to create something I thought I could not do.

I have completed the whole tutorial, and the model looks great.

I do have a question though. There is no more video about the Glue line that was made. It does not show up in the final render on the tut.

When I applied the glue line to the meshsmoothed model, it fit good, but still looked like a black like and not a door seam.

I noticed a few finished pieces here have door and hood seams. How were those created? With the method here?http://www.danielbuck.net/

I was unable to get the seam to look like the real car, because the edges get smoothed out with meshsmooth and dont follow the real countoures of the door seam.

Mabye smoothing groups? Don't even really know what they do, but it sounds like something that would work.

Or somehow make the glue spot "indent" the body of the car?

Any help would be great :)

TIA

MuseSyndrome
03-24-2004, 02:57 AM
Yeah those seams must've disappeared somewhere along the way, maybe I accidentally deleted them or something...who knows....
To get realistic seams, you really have to model them. I just used Glue because it would save time.:) The method I use to create seams is to select the edges that make up the seam and chamfer them by a small amount (usually 0.1). After cleaning up some extra vertices that I don't need, I would select the faces that I just created with the chamfer and extrude them in (by local normals). Daniel Buck's method would work just fine as well, experiment and see which method works for you.

MixTracks
03-24-2004, 01:47 PM
Thanks for the reply. What I ended up trying (after MANY failed attempts) is a shell, chamfer and move combo. Attached is the result.

Be nice, this is my first "real model" in 3DS, and there are issues with the window frame placement after I cut the door, and the interior and rest of car are hidden.

What do you think about the model? I am also learning about lights and stuff. Default MAX material with the standard 3 light system and a syklight. White enviroment, with white plane floor. The three spots are set to overshoot and the key light is casting an shadow. The light tracer is set also in render options (it takes for freakin' ever to render with this turned on).

Is this room and lights set up correct also?

Thanks again all! :applause:

MuseSyndrome
03-25-2004, 06:19 AM
Definitely not bad for your first model. Of course there are some problems but there are just as many in mine:) . Keep referring to photos when you're unsure about what a certain part looks like.
You can set up your lights whatever way you like, there's no single 'correct' way to do it. As long as it looks nice it doesn't really matter. Keep up the good work.

By the way, is there a specific vehicle you guys would like to see modeled? Preferably one that isn't so common but with a good set of blueprints. Or a concept car perhaps? He's taking a plane turned into an EPoly and selecting border edges and SHIFT+Dragging them to create new polygons. Best alternative to box-modelling, especially in this kind of situations, IMO.

first of all thanks for the great tutorial..im just sad it doesnt have audio.. i mean its for newbies..

anyway i got stuck at video N1.. at 4.19.. right after u resize the viewports.. when u move the selected vertices to the side of the car.. it seems u make a copy of it , moving it but it seems like it automaticly makes a connection from the middle ones to the new ones u dragged!

I mean i can move them while pressing shift..but it just clones the vertices..it doesnt make any kind of "connection"

I hope u understand..please explain.. as I got stucked on that part and i would really like to move on

Great tutorials I love them but in the Second tutorial I don't get something,
You select the Pan tool, zooms in on everything, You don't select anything ( as far a I can see ) , grabs the target weld ( with a shortcut ) and than you pick the polygon tool and just select 4 polygons,

( From minute 1 till 10 seconds later )

What have you donde to make that 4 polygons?

Thnx in advance

Cytrix: What do you mean? Those four polygons have always been there. It's not very clear in the video though. As I've said before, you don't have to follow this step-by-step. Use what you know already to solve your problems.

Hey everyone, I bring you some good news and some bad news.

Good news first: I'm planning on making a set of fully-fledged video tutorials (with sound and everything) that will render this one obsolete. I'm currently in the process of finding the right car, as there are plenty of criteria it'll have to meet: not too easy/hard, not too dull, not too cliche etc.
I've got a couple in mind, but I'm free to any suggestions you might have. It's best if the car has decent blueprints on the web (to make my life a bit easier:)).

Now the bad news: I won't be putting this one back up as this will soon become obsolete. However, you guys are free to do it if you wish. But for now, visit www.3d-palace.com for all your video tutorial needs.

Cheers.

you can't know the size of the vdo because the file is given by a php script that give you the stream ex: down.php?id=1264861
Sometimes the file is wrong. ( The script must have pb :) ) Try it later, an other day. You gonna have the right file.

incidentally, registeration for 3d-palace - www.3d-palace.com/forums (http://www.3d-palace.com/forums)

To log in and download log in and click "Keep me logged in"

Also remember to unblock popups as the downloader is a popup system. Also check firewalls. Most important however is making sure that "Keep me logged in" is checked as that is what sends the cookie which the downloader app also uses.

Thanks to a collaboration between 3d-palace and the cgtalk community the tutorials by Blittze have now been re-sourced and uploaded to the 3d-palace website where you can get download them again for free! A big thanks to Morzon, Nnurgle2 and Error4042 who helped by re-obtain these tutorials for the community at large.

14 parts in total, they are in the 3d-palace download system now, so please feel free to download.

http://www.3d-palace.com/video.php?vid=58

Ok, popular problems regarding 3d-palace solved here;

1. I Cant Register - www.3d-palace.com/forums (http://www.3d-palace.com/forums) and click Register

2. I cant download - When you log in, click "Keep me logged in"

3. What format is this? What Codec is it? - Search this thread - its the TSCC Codec

4. Is there a 56k option for downloading - Feel free to use the downloads exe. It supports resume...etc. Its crap and even I dont like it, however it functions just about. Bear in mind that these tutorials are about 400 megs though.

5. What is The Matrix? A lot better than the two sequels.

Right, [insert cool and somewhat amusing departing message of your choice]

hi there. first of all thank you for making this video tutorial. i'm eager to start. but it is annoying that everywhere i've got to register. what's the deal with it (when it is for free and there is no forum i want to talk to)? why not make a community account, one login for everybody who is registered here? anyway - i'll sign up there now since i want to see that tutorial everyone is so excited about :bounce:

Hi

Good question regarding registration. I get that one now and again, so I will attempt to answer it concicely.

The Lotus Elise set averages some 400 megs in size. If you consider that it will be downloaded thousands of times this is a massive bandwidth situation. Now, I offer 3d-palace mainly as a free service apart from some restricted access tutorials and a DVD set, those are what I use however to pay for the free aspects of the site. If I was to allow anyone to download at all however without logging in and using our download here is a timeline of what would happen.

00:01am - I make announcement on forum at cgtalk and post direct AVI links.
00:05am - 1000 downloads of 400 gigs on various work lines, university 29 meg lines...etc.
00:11am - First posts of the direct download http appear on various other sites.
00:15am - 3d-palace begins to show stress. Index.php takes about 19 minutes to load
00:22am - Warez sites, chinese sites, poser sites... etc ... all post AVI links on front page
00:23am - 3d-Palace bandwidth of 2 terrabytes impodes, overage charges run like a taxi meter at Christmas.

Maybe that is a slight exaguration, however it is easy to see that 1000 users downloading 400 megs means that 400,000 megs of my bandwidth is used. I dont mind this, however I prefer that the people who are downloading are registered so that I can track what is popular as well as so that I can encourage a shared learning experience...etc. If I throw it open to the wolves, then I will be leeched to death.

I think it takes about 30 seconds to register up, and I am hosting the tutorials for no profit so please take the time to register and download, and I hope that answered your question a little ;)

If you could put it up as a bit torrent, that would ensure NOBODY would lose unnecessary bandwidth, BT ensures people don't leech as much.

Thanks!

Hello,

Thank you very much for this video tutorial, I have been wanted to model a car or and aircraft for quite a while now, and have never gotten it right.

I know that this method can be applied to any other car, but I would like to model the Lotus so that I can follow your tutorial through, so incase I get stuck I can watch the video in more detail. I managed to find Blueprints of the Lotus Elise, Front, Back, Side from Suurland's website, but there was no Top blueprint. I have searched the net for the Top blueprint, but I can not find it anywhere. You mentioned you got the blueprints of the website you linked to, I have also searched on there but I can not find a Lotus Elise Top blueprint.

Please could you direct me to a Top blueprint for the Lotus Elise so that I can start car modeling?

Thank you very much, will post up my picture of how it turned out or if I have any problems.
