View Full Version : texturing prob in Maya,
kassun 01-29-2004, 09:08 PM I am working on texturing a simple house. The problem is that the roof no matter what I do it looks flat and has no depth. I am attaching my color map and bump map. I have the bump depth set to .02 in Maya, any more or less looks terrible. I am using the Total textures vol 1,2,3. And my maps are 1024/1024. Help appreciated.

I always have to fiddle alot with bump settings to get them looking right. One thing I do (which maybe you could try) is to just connect the bump texture up but leave your color slot with a default gray or something. Then you can do test renders adjust the bump level to something appropriate before apply the color.
I say this because I find bump value to be a bit arbitrary. They need to be set on a custom basis, so simply choosing 0.02 might , in itself, not be the right way to get your bump map dialed in.
Also, I adjust bump values depending on how far the camera is away from the object. So 0.02 might only work in *some* cases.

Are you able to get any bump whatsoever on it? It seems like it's not taking.
I've been having similar problems lately and it turned out that Mental Ray was crapping out because of UV set issues. Definitely test with a gray surface and see if the bump is taking at all.

here is a better render lit with HDRI. I am still working on the bumps, I'll let you guys know in a few days how it turned out. Thanks for all your help:)

Hey,
I can't see that much, as the camera is not that close to the roof. But, some things to try: If the bump is looking tooooo soft and round, try reducing the filter under "effects" in the bump node.
You should try adding a diffuse and specular map as well.. For more on these, see the tutorial that Leigh put up (can't recall the name, but it's the new tutorial). With tiles, the diffuse map would work very well.
