HI,

I am a beginner in Maya. I have been haveing problems with texturing. I have few ?

1) Lets say i have modeled a hand in Maya. I want to textrue it. (Do i creat the texture in Photoshop) or do i takes pictures of my hand and put them in the UVS?

2) Ok about the UVs (let say i have finished modelind a face. ( I want to texture it. What i have been doing is going to the "Edit polygons and then it to Texture and then pressing Automatic Mapping. ( IS the right) because i have seen tutorial that say i need to cut the UVS and join them and stuff. I have tried doing this but when i selet a part i want to cut, and it also selets the uvs conneted to it and after i cut it it does not move. I don't know if this is clear or not.

3)What i have been doing in texturing models is, going on the internet to find the like texture of slate or ruty metal. But these images are so small. Do u guys do this or do u creat your won on photoshop.

4) When i take a UV snap shot, i bring it into photoshop, and it is so small. What should i do about this. And if do have textures to put on the UV snap shot, i have transform them and they look horable. What should i do?

4) What should i do about textures that are stretched?
I know there is this "number and color map i put on a model. but is that map found in maya or do in need to get it from some where?

Sorry about any spelling mistakes

I would be very thankfull if some one could clear this up for me

Thanks
Tabha

1) Most people use photos for this. Painting will give better results if you can paint well, since you can paint just the color information, and paint separate maps for other material effects (bump, specular, etc).

2) I'm not a Maya user. Doesn't it ship with tutorials? I heard it comes with video tutorials. If not there are some on www.3dbuzz.com

3) Check out the sticky thread at the top of this forum for lots of good photos.

4) Scale the UV snapshot to match your texture size... it is only a guide, and will be discarded once your texture is finished. Maya should have an option to change the size when it makes the UV image.

5) Here is a grid texture (http://www.ericchadwick.com/examples/images/testgrid.tif) I like (580kB TIFF). If you display it on your model when you are adjusting the UVs, it will help you see any stretching, so you can fix the UVs.

Hope that helps. I know it can be confusing when you are just starting out.
