Hey everyone, I was told to post here by my good friend NanoGator.

This is one of the sets for my high school Senior Project film. It's the control room of a Russian submarine sometime in the future (about 25 years).

Here's a rough sketch of the Nilo Rodis-inspired design.

(I've since done a bunch of other sketches but none of them are really interesting heh)

Where I am now:

And lastly, here's a wireframe which I rendered out yesterday.

There still is a LOT of work to go, it's progressing steadily. This is turning out better than I had hoped, but man I wish I had the money to build real sets. :)

Yesterday I worked on the chair (not the captain's chair, he's got a bit more comfortable one). It's a damn near photorealistic representation (if you ask me) of my drum throne which I'm using for the bluescreen photography because it doesn't have a back to it. I needed a CG version for the background action though, so here it is.

I am so Impressed this is a Senior Project. I'm to understand you are going to blue screen and use live actors?

Very nice work - and cool stools!:)

Hehe, thanks everyone.

J.R. Adams - Yes, that's the plan. In the past year I've advanced from a horrid blue bed sheet to an entire wall covered in blue fabric with 3 650 watt lights lighting it. For a 16 year old, It's quite effective, I can get professional composites (limited only by the fact that I use miniDV) with After Effects. :)

I'll post some updates tomorrow probably, I have several designs on the drawing board for the bridge door.

Definitely cool looking.

just how big is this submarine?

Although this looks cool, your reference for scale is somewhat not entirely real. Submarines do not have the ability to have large walkways or large open areas. Large open areas are covered in pipes, cables, stowaways.

If this is a project to be "real", I would suggest you have a look at submarine plans if not only to get a better feel for scale. Jane's put out a good book showing submarines from old to new, and it's like $20 and a good reference.

If you want, you can PM me. Submarines have a direct link to my way of what I do for a living. ;)

If the avatar doesn't give it away.

I thought about getting some fairly large wooden slats and
buying the blue/green paint to do that. then i moved into
a 620 sq ft apartment in san dieog. ($950 a month). I don't have the room, which saddens me...

Duderender, this submarine is BIG :D As well as being constructed 30 years in the future. I might take you up on the offer though... and I'll definitely look for that book. Thanks, didn't know Janes had one on submarines.

Toddler - Yep, space is always a problem with bluescreening. If I could, I'd rent out a studio or something so I could have more freedom of camera movement... but for now, I'm stuck with one wall.

That's all cool man. I just wanted you to be aware of the reality. Just looking at the scale you have there, this thing will be far larger than anything manufactured today, and even those are huge.

Either way, you have my interest. Keep it up.

I think it looks extremely cool and is pretty well done also!
I like submarines and I am looking forward to seeing your project progress.
I have to agree with Duderender though, it is not the way I would imagine a submarine- bridge to look like, not even in the future...

GREAT! I didn't intend to belittle your for being young. It's a compliment.

I'll try to keep track of your progress.

Hey everyone, back again.

I finalized a concept drawing for the main door yesterday and started building it today. Here's the concept -

and what I've done so far (not too much, I just started again today) -

It's not a huge update, because honestly I haven't done much heh. I'll post more when I have something substantial to show.

Pic-A-Card,

Something to add to your reference material, a rare book on sub design now online (http://www.rockhounding.net/busby/)

Oh, thanks. That’ll definitely be an interesting read. The Janes book is on order from Amazon. I can't wait to dig into it.

On another note, I've been contemplating how I'm going to texture this thing. I didn't think about it until now, which wasn't a great idea but... too late. I'm thinking procedurals are really the only way to go. However, I'm interested in knowing how I would get grit and rust procedurals to appear in corners and on edges only? I experimented with weight maps today, however nothing seemed to be effective. I did the map, set the gradient to "alpha", starting with white and ending with black. Though the gradient didn't want to move. Can someone give me a few pointers? :) This is the first time I've attempted this (and really the first time I've ever used gradients extensively). Any help would be appreciated.

Yah, I know, long time - no updates. I've had too much to do over the past two months.

Here's what I did today though -

I need to start working on the button layout... uhg. Heh. *dusts off submarine books*

Here's an update. I re-did the lighting setup, so it now takes 6 minutes to render instead of 20, and, I think, conveys the mood I was trying to create more effectively.

http://www.scifi-pics.com/images/vorbridge_wip22_small.jpg (http://www.scifi-pics.com/images/vorbridge_wip22.jpg)

However, I'm getting split views on this. Some people hate it the cooler tones, some love it. What do you guys think?

duderender

Mood is much better! Bravo!

There is some weird artifacts on the top of the platform.

I think this looks absolutely beautiful....Whats throwing me off though is all that high tech gear and the futuristic look...with leather stools??? Who cut the budget for the voyage? :D

Not to say the stools dont look good or anything.

I like it very much, expecially the use of lights. :buttrock:
I'd add some fence however. Life on a submarine must be quite unstable :)
