View Full Version : How To: Bake lighting into texture?
TerryHan 01-29-2004, 06:27 AM Hi,
just want to ask if there's anyway to bake lighting into texture? I have created a low poly character and I wanted to have highlights and shadows on the texture. I'm using 3d max 5.
Thanks in advance.

Ya, i know the render to texture function can render lighting into the texture. But I got a problem with that.
I used lighting plugins to light up my scene, when i render the scene it looks ok but when i use render to texture, the texture unwrap becomes black in color.
Is it that the render to texture function cannot support lighting plugins or maxscripts?
Thanks

Might want to check the mapping channel. For some reason, Max likes to try to use 3.

er... i don't know what you mean. Do you mean the mapping channel in the material editor?

Each time you add a Texture Element, Render To Texture automatically resets the Use Channel spinner to 3. Change it to the UV channel you want to use. Also, turn off Automatic Unwrap Mapping in the General Settings rollout, if you want to use your own UV channel.
During rendering Render To Texture only shows the same image that the main renderer sees, but it actually saves the lightmap as a separate image. So if it looks black, you need to open the saved file to see the real result.
Hope that helps. It was confusing to me at the start.
