View Full Version : architectural renders
I'm working on architectural renderings for a house project, my question is are there any more architecturally based sites like this for modeling in maya (or online architectural references)?
I'm basicaaly using a 1 linear curve and tracing a plan on center, then offsetting the wall thickness on both sides to make the walls themselves, then converting to polys, then extruding up my heighth, then cutting out my openings. Is there an easier way of making a building?

3DS MAX/VIZ are better suited to architectural work, you can import your dwg or dxf file and work from that if you are working off plans anyhow, by the sounds of it there isnt an easier way....unfortunately:surprised

Maya can import dxf files.

thats true, but as i understand it VIZ will update the file as you work on it in AutoCAD.

maya 5 imports dwgs. i work with dxfs from autocad though because i only have 4.5.
i use the 'create polygon' tool and just snap to the curves of my dxf file. place your dxf cad on it's own layer and then make the layer a 'reference' layer. it works fine. you can extrude from there and start creating booleans for windows, doors, etc.
"creat polygon" works better than create a curve, offset, loft, and then extrude for some reason when it comes to the boleean operations. I was having some problems with it just not cutting doors/windows/etc no matter what I did.
Anybody know arch reference sites? I found cgarchitect.com but I'm looking for plans and or materials samples.

I would be interested in similar sites if anyone knows of them about how Maya is being used in the architect field.
(I'm familiar with Alias' recent article)

yeah. i agree. it would be nice if there was a site for maya architectural rendering. i've contemplated doing some tutorials or trying to set up a site but i'm still learning maya's ins and outs for myself too. dont know if i'll ever know it all. most of my architectural work was done in 3dsmax or lightwave. lightwave was not suited for architectural work or at least going from cad files to animation.
my company does nothing but architectural renderings and i've committed myself to transition away from all the other projects to work only in maya. i've been looking for a maya architecture site for awhile. i know. let's all create one. we'll be filthy rich.... or maybe we'll just filthy.
solid.

Did someone say filthy rich?! Count me in!
Seriously, I'm doing this kind of stuff. But I'm trying to do it more artistically than the standard "slap AutoCAD files directly into max and render it" kind of thing.
With Maya 5's vector rendering, it seems like a great multi-media solution for getting designs to your clients.....CD-ROM renders and walkthroughs, printed vector graphics, Flash versions on the web.
I'll keep my eye out.
Regards!
